Good to have a 4x4 in Spain, I think the shop mentions he adjusted them to pass the road licence check (that is just turning the 54 mm Nut a bit)
Euro4x4 is ok, last week they send me a wrong part and I got to keep it
For hard to find parts I go to the dealer, just find the part number first on other sites, I have these collected here:

If you bought the car as is better not come back to that shop, it is something he should fix if you have like 3 month warranty.

Washing is not a fix but with a lot of brake cleaner or diesel and a brush I got mine cleaned so at least you can see what is going on.
For now make sure the fluid levels are fine, drive a bit and check 4x4 low on gravel in a turn should be quit, no clacking sound.

So most important: if it stops leaking the diff oil is low (metal damage) and first read the forums before you do it yourself, after a while the pictures and txt becomes familiar.

A few shops from Germany are also pretty good with parts, I have adres here: http://hj60.freeforums.org/shop-websites-parts-lc-for-sale-t33.html
good luck, Spanish will help if you stay longer, first the grocerys and food, then technical :)

I didn't want to put it in 4w until I checked the gear oil just in case. I know it's still leaking, but I don't want to chance messing up the gears. We tested 4L before we bought it and it sounded fine and worked great a week ago.

But good news! I sent a message to the previous owner/mechanic with the pictures and that I suspected an inner axle seal leak and this is what he said

"Ok no hay problema mandame foto de ficha Tecnica para poder buscar Los recambios y despues hablamos ok pidelo a la Gestoria o bien esperate UNOs Dias q te venga la documentation no pasa nada por q conduzcas asi UNOs Dias vale"

I am pretty sure that means if I send him the specs he will order the parts and that I can still drive it and that he will give me all the paperwork when I pick up registration? @AlbertoSD could you confirm that pretty please?

Part of me wants to do it because I never have and I want the accomplishment feeling! But the other part knows I need to buy more tools first and since it looks like it has never been serviced, those bolts are going to be tricky! At least now I've had all of you to help inform me and I've watch enough videos I could probably do it blindfolded. Jk

Should I purchased the parts and try to get a Marlin Crawler seal and a good quality kit? Or should I trust that he will get OEM. He owns a garage in town.

He will find the cheapest kit he can find... how about you buy the parts and he supplies the labor? It's not ideal, but at least you will know the parts are quality ones.

Buy you own quality parts. You need to be clear about the extent of the work. A full strip down from hub to hub is what you need.

Hi @MrsCait,

You have to give yourself some credit for your improving Spanish skills. The translation of what the mechanic said is pretty dead on. He added "is not a big deal if you drive it a few days like that" at the end. I would agree with this statement as long as the birfields have grease and the front axle has oil. Is this LJ70 equipped with auto or manual locking hubs on the wheels? Make sure they are "unlocked" if you are to drive it like so for a few days.

Also, I will agree with Rosco @roscoFJ73 and @Stumpalama that I would buy my own high quality parts and go from there.

Like many have said, it seems like a major undertake, but, it is actually not too bad. It is messy and dirty, but not a bad job overall.

This forum is a GREAT resource to us Land Cruiser owners. Make sure you keep these guys up to speed and they will provide a world of knowledge to any potential problem that you might encounter on days ahead.

Hope you are enjoying your time in Spain, MrsCait. That's where my family actually lives now.

Awesome guys. Thank you so much for your help. I owe you all a beer. Now when it comes to high quality parts I'm sure you all have your own opinions on which brand is best? It seems I cannot find the kit from marlin crawler for my truck? LJ70 1988 2LT

But this one should work http://www.euro4x4parts.com/parts/pkp2027-2137_swivel_rebuild_kit.html

Anyone have good things to say about this company? Looks like a good kit http://locktup4x4.com.au/super-duty-swivel-hub-rebuild-kit-bundera-1623.html

First off pull the diff vents and verify that the line is clear and the valve functions.
Faulty diff breathers commonly lead to gear oil blowing past the inner axle seal and into the birf cavity.
Hate to see someone install all these new parts only to have the same problem reappear!

If the breather is toast be sure to extend the line/lines into the nice warm and dry engine bay as per Mud.

I would not worry about driving it as long as you have grease or oil in the system.
Buy your parts and dig in once all consumables are in your hands, lay your parts out in the order you took them off.

Hi all,

IIRC either of these two kits from MarlinCrawler should work for your LJ70. BTW, the LJ/RJ Series use HiLux axle assemblies.

If you are up to a challenge, I would encourage you to assemble the hand tools and parts necessary, then tackle this project. Time consuming, messy, but not that mechanically difficult.

Regards,

Alan
