For the last few months I've been experiencing a pretty annoying squeak from the outside of my LC. I can't hear it unless I have a window down or the music turned off but its still bothering me.

I notice it at any speed over the smallest bumps and uneven areas in the pavement. I've checked bolts on, and around the rear bumper and even applied WD-40 but it hasn't helped. I only hear it after the rear wheel/ end of the vehicle has gone over the bump.

If anyone has experienced this or has any suggestions to fix it, I would really appreciate it!

Check the top shock nuts on the rear shocks.

This - I had a similar squeak. Spray your WD on upper shock bolt and see if it stops.
If it does, check the torque of that bolt.
Failing that, white lithium grease on the bushing worked for me.

Swaybar bushings might also be a culprit - jsut looked at mine and they're spent after 90k.... whitelines on order.

Alright guys, Thanks for all the suggestions.

I sprayed my rear bushings with WD-40 and it didn't help. Just this morning I took it to a local guy that specializes in working on Land Cruisers. He told me everything looks fine, bushings look ok, shocks look fine (no leaking) but should probably look into replacing them in the near future.

He basically said that it has 130K miles on it and its going to have squeaks. Unfortunately I'm pretty nit picky and want to exhaust all my options. Do you think replacing the shocks could help? and if so what should I go with?

Its an 06 stock everything, everyday vehicle and it does have the automatic air suspension.

I'm with you. It's not some old POS. Find that squeak.
This sounds exactly like the squeaky rear top shock bushing I fixed a couple weeks ago. I'm running OME shocks, but it could still be your problem. I don't think WD40 is the solution here. Mine is less than a year old, and was squeaking because I hadn't tightened it quite enough when I did the install.
You'll need a couple open-end wrenches (can't remember the size). On the OME shocks you can hold the shock body below the mount with one wrench, and turn the top nut with the other wrench. A ratcheting wrench makes it easier, but it's not required. Get under there and tighten the top nut.

Guys, OP mentioned it's an AHC vehicle so it's unlikely a shock top nut. Exhaust and cat shields can develop an annoying squeak, I'd look there. And your Land Cruiser guy's recommendation to change out your AHC shock actuators that aren't leaking isn't necessary, other parts of the AHC system wear out, but not so much the shock actuators.

I have an 03 no AHC had a similar squeak, can only hear it with the windows down and over bumps.. First this I did since I had original shocks and over 160,000 was replace with OEM. Great ride improvement but still a squeak... So I loaded up on Fluid Film, I use it on my boat better than wd40 IMO.. I had to hit everything over a 1 week period and just kept spraying areas and finally got it. Only thing is that i have no idea what it was but at least the sepak is gone ...

That is what I know

I have the same issue but no AHC. I had a shop install an OME lift and when warm weather hit I started getting an odd squeak from the right rear. It drives me nuts!

Shock top nut. Tighten it. It was a day of celebration when my squeak went away after doing this.

Rear drive shaft at the yolk? Sounds like the truck settles down after a bump and compresses the shaft.

What's the easiest way to do that?

The 4th picture down on the second page of these instructions shows the location of the rear shock top nut.

Use a wrench just below the lower bushing to hold the shock and keep it from spinning. Use a second wrench on the top nut to tighten.
Ideally you want to see a little compression on the bushings (a little bulge), but not so much that they're totally squished out. Several partial turns on the top nut should make a difference (if that's your problem).

^^ a strap wrench on the shock body will hold it in place too.

Check where the sway bar link connects to the frame too. Grab the link with your hand and try to move it around.

same problem with my 2001 LC two years ago.installed new suspension iron man lift kits and replaced all the bushings we suspected to be responsible for the squeaks. symptoms persisted. finally we found out it was the emergency brakes parts mechanism that were rusty and loose.specially if you seldom use it. check your E-brakes its behind the rear disc brakes.

Time to find a new "specialist".

no, seriously...

I've been battling a rear suspension squeak for months. Reading this post got me to check my rear upper shock nuts...low and behold they were not tight, despite a recent install of new OME shocks. I guess since its a difficult space to work in, they weren't over tightened in the first place. My fault. Tightened them up and drove it and...squeak squeak squeak over bumps.

SO.....I decided to take apart my left rear drum and immediately noticed the front brake shoe resting against the backing plate. Tightened a few things up and presto...silent now.

As aggravating as this was, I sure hope this helps someone else fix an annoying squeak.

I'm experiencing a similar squeak over bumps and coincidently had the e-brake adjusted recently. I'm going to take a look and see if that is that problem and go from there. Thanks!
