Hi,
I want go back to the old grey R16 split wheels in my 81' fj40.. (currently with 33x12.5R15 on shinny chrome 15x10 wheels).

I already have a set of 16x5.5 split steelies and a donor set of 265/75 R16 Mickey Thompson ATZ tires.

Does anybody have tried to fit these tires on split Toyota 16*5.5 rims?

265 tyre is way too wide for 5.5" rims.

5.5" wide rim means something like a 235/85r16 at most (or 7.50r16 if you want 'old school') tyre.

Just look at what the tyre manufacturer rim width range is for the tyre you're after (7" minimum for the 265 tyre).

cheers,
george.

I run 255/85r16 on my 5.5 split rims... Lots of guys do

The 265/75 aren't as tall and a tad wider... I haven't heard of anybody using that size... I am comfortable with 33.2x10.4-16as that is what the 255's are

If it was me ... I'd find a set of 255/85's

255 is WIDE for a 5.5" rim. That's a 10.5" profile (nominally) on a 5.5" rim. Must look like a balloon... What tube do you run, it would need to be very inflated/thin to fill that 'space'.

I would imagine handling/ride would be compromised with that profile versus rim width.

cheers,
george.

255 is the perfect size IMHO fits like a glove :)

Top photo is toyo m55 in 255's
Bottom is Cooper ST in 255's

Before them were BFG same size and also SS in 34x9.5

Today most guys run the 33x10.5 on stock steelies 10.5 is the new 9.5 :)

Several guys even run 255/100's aka 900r16's and some still 1100r16

There are no issues at ALL with running 255 on split rims

Hmm - those pics the tyres look pretty narrow for 255 profile. They look similar to 235 on my nissan:

I guess it depends on real measurements of a specific tyre versus general sizing.

george.

The toyos were a bit wider than the cooper ... Need to remember the tires are on narrow rims so the real life measurements come out less than they say on website

Tread width is about 8"

Hmm, I measured the cooper sst mounted and they are quite a bit more than 8" tread (inflated), so if your 255's are only about 8" that's considerably narrower than the nominal 255 which should in "theory" be 255/25.4 = 10" wide at the tread...

I typically run around 38psi on them empty and around 42psi when loaded up for the bush.

cheers,
george.

Thanks for the comments and pics!!. I already suspected that the 265s will end their life at the Tacoma :( .

The 255s at the above pictures look very good at the 40. Tall enough and wide just as the body width.

By the way.... there is a home made procedure to fit the HUB caps (chromed) at the 16R split rims? I was thinking to make the OEM replicas clips and attach them to the wheels with small bolts (not welded, not rivet).

Thanks!

Mario

Me again...:bang: ...After some investigations, I realize that 255/85R16 tires are very hard to find here (Chile), lets say almost impossible. I'll have to import them from USA. Not as I was planing.....

Anyway, Today I made a little test, mounting a LT Discoverer Cooper tire 265/75R16 into a R16 /5.5 Toyota split rim, just as a test. (BTW, the tire is old and the rims is not restored yet) just a reference!!!.

The result... looks good to me... (aspect ratio with the wheel)

What do you guys think?

Only as a reference, the black one is a HI MILER 7.00-15 on R15 split.

Can't you find size 235/85/16" ? that is what it supposed to be standard.

7.50 R16 should be available just about everywhere, right?

Yes, both availables here!!

But I need to keep as closer as possible to 33'' . My current setup is H41 and 3.7 R/P but with a 305 V8.

255/85 R16 seems to be the perfect size for me.

These are the tires/wheels availables in my "private stock" but not sure about.... Steelies :hmm: in my mind !!!!
