so Ive picked up a 1984 bj 60 as my next rig after years of wheeling lwb samurais. my plans are for 39.5 iroks 4.11s with a nwf blackbox and the stock 3b to start. My question is will the 3b be enough for short trips on the highway and beach cruising until I get the 6.0 ready to swap. or should I be looking for upgrades for the 3b asap

There is no point in upgrading the 3b. Turbo is the only worthwhile investment.
The 3b is fine for the slow lane on the highway, but you will probably get stuck in sand.
The engine has alot of very low rpm torque, but that's it

The 3B will be super slow with 39.5s and 4.11s. Be prepared to go slow, or invest in a turbo, like @Cruising Canuck said.

that's what I had figured was that it was going to need a turbo to turn the 39.5s with just 4.11s in the diffs. I talked with a cruiser shop up here and they interested in my parts hj-60 for a turbo swap so Im thinking that's what I will do. my first planned trip this year will be three days of beach running on the queen charlotte island off the north coast of bc Im hoping the nwf box will help there if the turbo isn't on by then
