Hi All
I recently rebuilt my head. Its surface is ground and ready to go. Now I'm wondering how clean the block deck needs to be. I've scraped all the gunk off and block sanded with 120 grit so it's actually very clean. However, I see pics showing top decks having a mirror finish, whereas, mine still has some stains.
Does the pic below look good enough? Extra sanding is now only showing marginal results.

Stains are not a problem. Mirror smooth finishes usually mean the block was decked (milled). As long as you don't have any surface irregularities, pitting, scoring, etc. you should be fine.

Yes it looks about as good as they get without using machinery. Be careful though with sandpaper or anything with "grit" ,if it got into the cylinders or down the oil returns which it always does, you have to get that out of the block before you run the sand through your bearings.

Make sure she is clean and the HG is on correctly, then button it back up :)
