The rear crossmember is the biggest difference. 74 and up had square lights set into the member and 73 and down did not.
 
Torque tube behind the transfer is different and a little further back on the later frames. This was for the four speed. Won't effect using a later with a three speed but harder using a four speed on a pre 73 FJ40 frame. Tube is also different making harder to install the longer taller four speed.
 
I swapped a 76 on to a 71 frame and the torque tube is pretty tight with the rear of the transfer case. It works though. The rear crossmember and thus tail lights are totally different, so you will need to account for that in some way.
