Hey all, I've been creeping around on here for the last couple months, reading build threads, stealing ideas and fantasizing about smashing over rocks, trees and digging pea gravel out of my shoes.

So I bought this heap.

1983 FJ60 - about a gizzillion miles on the clock, but just over 80K on a swapped in 2f out of a wrecked rig.

It's got the typical rust in the typical places, but the frame is solid and it runs decent!

It didn't take long to start stretching her legs. Out we go- maiden voyage out to Hackett Gulch.

There are plenty more pictures in the album where my buddy in the JK had to tow strap me over some things and out of some stuff.

Here's the sweet camp spot right on the river... and boy was it cold!

Before this trip, I didn't really poke around too much under the hood. I popped under there only once to investigate a vacuum issue I have noticed while test driving it. It turned out that the feed to the vacuum advance was cut. Ran a lot better after that. I could even go up hills! (kinda);)

Anyway, after we got back from the gulch I finally turned a screw driver on her. I popped the Air cover off to see how much dirt I'd collected from the trip and I found this.

And so it begins.

love the nest, and the rig and the camping spot

I've lived in my 60 for a while, looks like somebody lived in yours for a bit also.

Pressing on!

So I started pulling the bouncy bits and axle from the front. Thank god for the impact gun! It would have been murder without it.

Pulled the tires and I have to wonder how long the front shock has been in this condition. I think they are the Toyota originals.

I wish I had gotten some knuckle tear down pics, but they were pretty uneventful. I think they may had been rebuilt in the past as the little tabs weren't bent down around the inner and outer spindle nuts. How about finding an 54MM or 2 1/8 socket is the hardest thing ever?! (I still need to find one)
I ended up using a brass drift to work the spindle nuts off quite easily. All the bearings so far have been in immaculate condition which makes me feel better.

Got few parts in.

Right on, diving right into the deep water! Are you planning on re gearing for bigger tires?

I am actually that's why I hadn't really looked at the condition of the 3rd until this morning. My buddy has a couple 3rds laying around with 4.88's and budget lockers! :bounce: Bigger tires are coming as much as I will miss these 30x9.50's haha!

Generally it's the axles that are full floaters.....not the shocks.
Specter should carry that hub wrench you need. so does Summit...

Amazon carries it by OTC ( snap on quality ). OTC used to build the Toyota special service tools

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0002STRPO/?tag=ihco-20

they're actually quite common in 4x4 shops

It's so difficult for me to lay down $20 bucks for one socket though!

I've been down that trail twice with my SOA '60, all by my lonesome. Second time, I busted a front axle AND my 5/16 cable because I had too many city slickers with me. I used the winch to that big ponderosa just as you hit the creek to pull the back end around, then winched out another 300 feet or so. Amazing you need all 4 axles pulling on that loose granite. My uncle lives real close to that trail.

That's quite a buddy - extra 3rd's with 4.88s.

I just built my 54mm nut tool out of 1/8 strap.
