And what is it for. It's under the manifold close to the firewall.

Looks like the wire for the temperature sensor for the carburetor cooling fan.

Dig around on the driver side fender. I bet you'll find a loose wire. It comes out of the wiring loom probably 18-24 inches in front of the firewall. Just a guess
 
If its the green one i asked the same question.
My answer was:
"It is the exhaust gas temperature gauge its for CA models only so if you have a model from out of state thats why its not going to anything."
 
It's for a temp sensor that's near the exhaust manifold. It reacts to ambient temp in the engine compartment, not exhaust gas temp. If it's working, when it's hot enough in the compartment, it grounds the carb cooling fan circuit when engine is off and lets the carb fan run.
 
it looks like the carb fan temp sensor, but the green plug should not be that close to the manifold, it should be closer to the brake master.

where is the black wire, with red connector, then white wire going to? that seems like it should be the one going to the temp sensor.
