Im starting to think my rear springs are loosing their original height or it could be my 80 is just getting fat. Im on 863 springs in the rear and weight in at ~6700 wet and occupied. Anyone been down this road?

Believe the answer is yes.

I've seen quite a few threads in the 60's section on this, but not a lot over here. I know that if I kept all my camping gear in the truck all the time I would be running airbags or a set of 864's instead of the 863's given the weight. Another option would be to just make a spacer to toss in the back. :meh:

Just ordered new 863 and will report the results. This could be a slippery slope:eek:
Curious why another set of 863's? Seems there are more options avail now days?

My next step would be 864 but Im very happy with the way it rides and performs on and off road. When you look at the specs its a big jump 863/864. I ran 864 with valveable Bilsteins on an older 80 but it had a lot of heavy metal on it and 7200#

What size tires were those?

863's with approx. 40k miles on them.
Weight loaded ~ 6500
total sag ~ 1"

I don't have any driveway shots for comparison but you can see the frame to tire height difference pretty well in these photos.

Hey Phil, I have the 864's. They are fantastic when loaded with gear. The rest of the time it is rougher as you would expect. You spent a several days with me in Moab a few years ago. Do you recall anything too bad? Where I am most unhappy with the 864's is unloaded on a washboard road. If I were to do it again I would look at 863's or the equivalent and use airbags for when I am fully loaded. When I am fully loaded I rarely do anything remotely like crawling.

In the end you may be spot on. The weight in my 80 does not ever change with the exception Im low on gas or water. Part of my concern is the ride on wash board roads with my present set up is fast, smooth , comfortable, and stays planted to the ground. I really like the fact I dont bounce around and track straight partly why I re-ordered 863.

I do have a lot of (good) memories of Moab but non about the way your truck road.:D My Fav - GeoRoss - Ryan do you remember me? Im the guy who owns the tent you pissed on last night:eek::worms:

my 863's are still sky high and have more rust than the rest of the undercarriage, so I know they have been on the truck for a good long time. Less weight than stock, though, so that could be my problem :hillbilly:

I have 863's on the rear that are about 1 1/2 yrs old with lots (5,000 km) of heavy loaded hard use in addition to 7,000km easy unloaded road use. When the truck is empty, it rides about 1/2" lower than when they were new.

When I load it 2 full fuel tanks, 2 spare tires, and 500+ lbs of stuff it settles down about 1 1/2-2" from empty height. Add 3-4 rear seat passengers and it drops another 1/2" or so.
When empty I am 5-6" off of the rear bump stops. Nice thing about 863's is that I don't hit the rear bump stops often.

The manners on/off road & loaded or unloaded is good, I wouldn't want it softer or firmer. However, if I was to stop loading it so much or take off the heavy roof rack, I would want softer springs.

No matter how much I load it, the front never changes by more than 1/4"
