I'm gearing up towards a head gasket replacement and wondering which brand should I get. I've seen some at Amazon, here and there and not sure which set I should buy.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Dan

Thanks. I haven't seen a Toyota listed online, but wasn't searching for it as you mentioned. I'll check it out

Thanks a lot paladek for researching this for me, this is awesome. I didn't know about this site. I assume you've purchased from them? Their prices are great.

Hi DanoD,

Yes, I'm a long time customer......more than 15 years....!!!! I've never had any issues with them and yes, their prices are really great !!!! Also their customer support is also great....I can only speak for myself but I got a real person assigned to my account and I can email or even call that person with any kind of question regarding my order....
Try to order the parts from the same warehouse otherwise the shipping will add up....

Just FYI, because the packages will be shipping from your warehouse you will be buying from (usually UAE or Japan for me...) there will be some delays (5 to max 10 business days in my experience...) from the moment you get a confirmation (and a tracking nr....) that the packages have been shipped....

regards

you can email Beno who is a member of this site and will also tell you what else you should get at the same time when you order the gasket kit. His prices are also good. There is a few gaskets not included that you will want depending on how far you are going into the engine.

The Cometic gasket is a good choice, but only if you are doing a rebuild and can machine and finish the deck surface to a very high standard, correct?

The OEM Toyota (which is an updated design) is very tough and will last another 200,000 plus miles, even with boost (right, @scottryana ?)

I have read far to many reviews/posts of failed aftermarket head gaskets-beware!

Along with other OEM parts mentioned, don't forget plugs, wires, rotor, dizzy cap, accessory drive belts, fuel filter, and whatever cooling system work you want to do.

Yep, the redesigned headgasket seems to be doing quite well still even with 15+psi of boost :)

Ditto: Head gasket in my 96 FZJ80 was replaced with the Toyota part 200,000+ miles ago (normally aspirated engine). No issues.

Hi Kernal,

how many miles you had on your FZJ80 when the head gasket went ?....Reading a lot about 1FZ-FE head gasket failure I'm starting to get really paranoid....
It almost reminds me about my daughter's 2006 RX8....The rotary engine was so unreliable...my daughter had the Mazda dealer replace the engine twice under warranty....first one went at around 58K (that's roughly 34K miles !!!!), second one went after roughly 44K (almost 27K miles !!!!!) she sold the RX8 with 5K on the brand new engine (dealer installed...)....back to 1FZ-FE....it seems that the original head gasket will not last too much (120K to 150K seems to be the maximum life for the original head gasket !!!!!). So I should consider myself "very lucky" with my '96 LX450 SC with 165K miles !!!!!?????
Hopefully the new "updated head gasket" is much better that the initial one....!!!!????

regards,

Happened before I bought the vehicle, but somewhere around 125,000 miles IIRC. It's been discussed quite a bit over the years, a few have leaked really early (earliest I recall reading about was 50,000 miles), but the majority have never leaked. I do routine engine oil analyses and one advantage is that any coolant getting into the oil from a leaky head gasket will show up in the results.
