Need your opinion on color choice for a 40

Hi all,

I've been prepping my cruiser for painting and choose this color as the final color after breaking my head over greens, greys, and blues.

I got the paint from the Restoration shop. I sprayed one of the rear half doors and it looked really good to me but I would like to know what you guys think of this color on an FJ40. This paint was really easy to use. I was warned that metallic paint is more difficult to work with but I think I'll be able to manage it. It's a single stage urathane paint.

I'd appreciate your input!

Ohhh and here is the link to the website if someone is interested:

thats a cool color, the only way to know if it will look good is to spray it!..

I wanted to spray mine a gray metallic at one point, but I like the OEM colors..

Metallic may look strange on a 40.. you got to stay with the Puke and Piss Colors of the 70's

Thanks for responding Isotel. I was originally looking at the none matallic colors because I wanted to keep the FJ looking stock as much as possible but when I sprayed small areas with the colors I choose (kinda olive green and another darker green) it just didn't look that great TO me.

I figured after a a few trips to Rubicon and other offroading destinations I'll need to redue the body over the again so I can do a different color next time.

Like you said, spray it and see how it comes out.

Thanks again,
Roman

I always thought candies and metallics looked a little over the top and out of place on a cruiser IMHO. To each their own though - as long as you like it, that's all that really matters. Good luck and post up some pics of the finished product.

Nice color, but OEM colors are best IMO. It is your truck and your money and you can do what you want. Good luck!

Post a pic of the rear half door. I can't really imagine what colors look like on a cruiser. I gotta see a sample.

Ok, I'll paint a few parts and I'll post pics. I like OEM colors too but this is the oldest vehicle I've owned and the first none metallic. The way I look at it, it'll be a $100 lesson (I've wasted more on less).

changing color again to something more inline with the year and non-metallic paint. I'm really fixed on the blue/gray color, so I picked the Zenith blue which was available on Toyotas in 1970 (year of my Cruiser).

Should look great. Might want to think about adding some stainless or other colored parts to offset the main color IHHO. I am doing mine in mustard with all stainless stuff.

thanks webelk6, chrome would be awesome but i'm not sure that chrome will work out well where i'm going after the cruiser is painted. i'm gonna go with black rattle can or POR-15 paint on everything below the fenders.

I'm back and just wanted to show the final color I chose for the 40. I went with a 1970 Toyota Zenith Blue. Here he is with his grandson.

The paint job came out pretty good thanks to Restoration Shop for all their help and patience!

I vote "No" on metallic paint on 40's. Too "jeepish" for my tastes.

The choice to decide on your finishing touch to your cruiser is HUGE!!

I've had the metallics on my FJ's before....and really enjoyed them.

However, I too, went with an FJ blue for my current build-up.

Going VOODOO Blue on my 74 FJ 40.......Good choice with yours!!

It looks AWESOME!!

Metallic Grey or Stock Tan

I know a guy selling a "B"J45 LWB that is Toyota metallic grey and he has had trouble because people want tan/red/blue stock colors. The grey looks awesome but not stock. Now if you're never going to sell your family heirloom than go for whatever you like. I am waffling between metallic grey and stock tan myself - depends on my mood at any given moment. Today I like tan.
