Scotch-Brite Bristle Discs

Starting some rust removal and I was wondering if anyone had tried Scotch-Brite Bristle Discs? They are a little pricey but was talking to someone who just went on about how well they work and I wanted a little "mud" input.

I've never used them before. I like the 3M rust removal wheels on the angle grinder or a 60 grit flap disc on the same.

I haven't tried the radial ones, but I have used the ones with the face mounted bristles. I have experienced problems with the bristles breaking off. So I don't recommend them.

get the ones for a grinder that look like a round scotchbrite pad on steroids. the bristle ones dont work very well in my experience. None of them last too long if you hit lips, and ridges, but the scotchbrite ones with grit work really well.

I've used them and they worked well, but they cost too much for the time they lasted me due to breaking off. More like shattering and throwing shrapnel all over me. Of course I was using them on items with ridges and angles, etc. which I guess they were not designed for.

nothing like pulling metal bristles 1/2" long out of your arms!

I used them inside the tub of my 40. Did great, w/out removing the metal. Stay off the edges till the pad is nearly worn out...then finish it off.

The bitter irony is I have a no name Northern Hyd. "grinder" and it does not have the 5/8-11 shaft like the disk!

Which I did not remember until I got home with the disk!

I tried several types of disks when I stripped my FJ40. I really like the 4.5" bristle disks. Works best on flat surfaces, but some contours were not a problem. I only used one because of cost and availability. I could get little disks at NAPA, but not the 4.5" locally.

Eastwood wants like $30 for the one pictured above. Industrial supply houses have them for something around $12.

For rust and paint removal I really like 36 grit 4 1/2 flap disks in my Metabo angle grinder. Good control, not very expensive and you can grind down welds with the same disk.
