Epoxy Primer

Let me say first that I am not a painter but will attempt it when needed. Presently have windshield frame sand blasted bare ready to paint. Am going to prime with epoxy primer. Here is the question, how many coats should I put on and what grit do I sand with between coats? I do have a paint booth at work available which makes these jobs go easy.

Thanks

Kevin

hey, you dont nessarily have to use an Epoxy. As from what I was told epoxy is used basically when you want to primer then put bondo on top and have it adhere. You need Self-Etch this will "ETCH" itself into the metal making for a very long lasting seal as long as its not damaged between paint and primer. As far sand paper....just like 320 with your hand just to get it smoothed or even scuffpad if its not to rough or dirty.

I have used the PPG DP line of epoxy primers as primers, and I am using the DP90LF black as a topcoat (it's pretty close to chassis black). I usually just do two coats, and I have just let the first coat flash before spraying the second.

I've been real happy with the results from that. If I were to spray it over a cured coat, I'd probably scuff with 360 grit, I think.

The little pig is currently in a coat of epoxy primer. I like it because it seals. You can leave it in primer for a while.

I like the flat black look too.

The p-sheets for the product will specify all of this. For instance, PPG Deltron epoxy primer, eg, DPLF, it looks like it takes two coats and no sanding between coats unless you leave it more than a week. DPLF is not really designed to be sanded. Here's a link to the DPLF tech sheet.

Epoxy primer seals the metal you will only "need" one good coat for that. When I shot mine I put 2 coats on giving it time to flash ( about 20 minutes) before the second coat no sanding needed. Later when you shoot your high base primer you will have to sand but a little scuffing with 320 will do just fine.
