2K epoxy primer

Have heard a few different opinions and wanted to run by you all.
My 40 has some spots reapaired and then primered over with the typical auto parts rattle primer. Question is, do I have to remove all of the primer down to bare metal to use the 2K epoxy primer? It is real smooth now, can I just sand with 320 or so grit and spray the 2K over the existing primer. By the way the existing primer is not over bondo or rust. Thanks in advance for any advice.

There's a possiblity it could lift the old primer, you need to ask this question where you bought your 2k stuff. My first opinion is that it would be fine.

I would say sand off the old primer. If it's cheap, autopart store primer I wouldn't put a higher quality 2 part epoxy over top of it. Epoxy is supposed to be sprayed directly to bare metal. I've been doing autobody for 13 years, and if there is one rule of thumb you should follow is spend the time and do it right. Autobody is a very tedious and time consuming trade, and there is nothing worse than trying to save yourself a little bit by cutting corners only to have to do it all over again

...it will also go well over a coat of etching primer applied first.
