Best Color-Matching Option
I have a '70 FJ40 with what I was told was red tractor paint. It's not quite Massey-Ferguson as the can I have for touch up is definitely a lot brighter in color. What is the most efficient/inexpensive method for finding or having made color-matching paint? Thanks.

Go to someone like finishbastards (no...wait...finishmasters) They have a camera system called the Prophet that can come very close.

Dave,
Get in touch with Donny. His dad owns a bodyshop, he can tell you where to go and get the paint you need and how to get it matched. If you go to Tractor Supply (TSC), they sell a wide variety of tractor paints and they have color swatches. There are A LOT of different tractor reds. I think it's stuff made by Valspar and they have an activator (hardener) that you can add to make the paint more durable. I know there is one in Leesburg Va but I am sure there is one in MD as well. If you go out to Leesburg there is a kick ass Italian place called Villa Roma - cheap and great eats. TSC has a lot of cool stuff for Cruisers... -Stumbaugh |

Dave,
There's a TSC in the Warrenton/New Baltimore Metroplex. Great place for hi-lifts, recovery gear, trailer parts, and horse dewormer! __________________ '76 FJ-40 with a Hula Girl on the dash for me and a '65 FJ-45 LPB for the wife. Life is good. |

TSC is also great for SAE fasteners in bulk, they have some metric stuff but not nearly as good of deal. The paint they sell there is pretty good stuff for what it costs and I like the activator. Nothing even close to high quality automotive stuff but not even close in cost either and plenty good enough for an old 40.
Gotta love Warrenton, is Clark's brothers still there? That's kind of the Vienna Inn of that area. Hold out from the past...great stuff. -Stumbaugh |

Clark Brothers is still here and doing a booming business. It's nice to buy a gun and then step outside to shoot it! Clark Brothers is actually in the Warrenton suburb of Opal.
Ah, the VI - I haven't been there in a while but I'm sure that nothing has changed, not even the rag they use to wipe down the tables. __________________ '76 FJ-40 with a Hula Girl on the dash for me and a '65 FJ-45 LPB for the wife. Life is good. |

Au contraire, mon frere Bob!
My friend Brian's older brother bought the place from Phillip Abrams who I was also friends with. Phillip had an FJ80 with a few mods done to it... The new guys have really cleaned the place up. They actually wash the dishes now vs. the dunk and rinse...yuk. So no more lipstick and funk. You still see the crusty old guys in there but there are more families and young folks now. Brain runs the bar and his older brother used to manage a Clydes so they have kind of cleaned it up just enough to keep the character but not make it into a TGIF's or some other crappy place. We should get the CLCC to head there one day when I move home. Dave - this is right across from Wisam's shop that we went to that day. -Stumbaugh |

I stand corrected! As I've said before, I would attend the CLCC meetings, and maybe evn pay dues, if the meetings were held at the VI.

Amen to that.
Even for someone like Dave it would be easier to drive to Vienna than to Old Town The Cobra guys meet there on Sunday mornings and the 356 guys down the street at Anita's at the same time. That makes sense to me. Go when there is less traffic on a weekend morning vs. fighting traffic after work. I've brought that up countless times with the CLCC guys and gotten nowhere on it. Back in the mid 90's to late 90's we had meetings in Vienna, Fairfax, Herndon and Sterling and there were as many as 45 or more people at some meetings. When I get back, VI How's that for a plan?-Stumbaugh Last edited by colangut; 03-04-08 at 05:53 PM. |
