Heavy equipment paint

I'm totally new to painting but am thinking of shooting my 40 myself. I was wondering, anybody ever use equipment paint on a trail rig? From my experience it wears like iron, I've heard the prep can be less than perfect, and there are lots of cool color options. I'm kinda leaning towards Hitachi orange. Thoughts?

ACE Hardware carries all those colors in spray cans in their Rust Stop line. Might be easier and cheaper since it's like $3 per can. They are some cool colors.

My experience is the exact opposite. impliment paint is very soft.

Thanks for the input on ACE, I'll have to check it out.

Regarding wear I know that the paint on the excavators and dozers I have run over the years seemed to stand up to both wear and the elements really well. Maybe it is on thicker, or maybe its the flat finish that hides the abuse better. Thats why I was thinking to go this route, but again I know nothing about paint.

Prep correctly and let it harden/ dry for a week after spraying and you'll be fine.

I did my gray fj62 with 2-component equipment urethane and plan on doing my 40 (mustard, kinda like new cat yellow) with this same product. Not all equipment paints are created equal, but if you can get your hands on this, it has a superior gloss retention, which means no clear coat.

So is the two-part paint the stuff I've heard will put you in the nursing home if you don't use the correct respirator? Also in general how can you tell which equipment paint is the good stuff? I want to go with a relatively flat finish, and at this point I'm leaning towards the Ace as the have my color.

Personally, I'd go with the ACE or Rustoleum paint we've been yapping about so much here lately. That's where I'm gonna go when I get around to it.

With any paint coming outta a spray system, you need a respirator. Valspar makes a nice implement flat. A lot of hot rodders go with that "flat black" color. This is a nice option.

Have you done any test sprays to see how close that cat yellow matches mustard after it's dried? We've got alot of Diamond Vogel dealers around here.

Your best bet is to go to an auto place(which I did) and get a sample. Cost you about $8. Take it to D.V. , have em' match that sample and you will be golden, I mean mustard....

They did tweek my sample and it is "dead nuts on". Just make sure you get the pinnacle 415 which is not a high gloss, but a nice gloss.

Heck, I didn't realize that they could color match. I just assumed that it was like any other HE paint you buy at the Deere-Case dealerships, you get what you get. Thanks.

Napa auto stores will color-scan paint or use the factory color codes and put it in rattle cans at some locations if you want exact color. I believe the ACE cans are already matched to the manufacturers specs since they use the trademarked names of the companies like caterpillar and International right on the cans.

Best part about rattle cans is you can fi scrapes and scratches without pulling out all the paint equipment.

A single-stage urethane paint will wear like iron. Just make sure to wear a good respirator...

Just make sure you get the proper color from like "finish masters." They typically will shoot you a couple of ounces in a tiny pint can that you can take to DV. When I usta do alot of sandblasting, we used this product on salt trucks, weed cutters and the like. Very tough , and very easy to touch up.
