plating
I am thinking about getting a plating kit.I have noticed people who have done thier own and also sourced out their plating.Looking at the pics I am wondering how it goes with parts that have springs and moving parts ie bonnet catches bolts with washers attatched brake linse etc.Does the plate work its way in to the areas that have something touching them or does this area not get plated,
Thanks Shamus |

Are you talking about yellow cad plating?
If so, definitely post up some serious details, as I'm definitely thinking of going the same route. My father in law told me it is illegal in the U.S. for plating companies . He worked at Allen Bradley in Milwaukee, Wi . They usta plate tons of stuff, until it got banned. As far as I know he could be wrong, as I have seen some nice pics from other members on here with plated stuff. Let me know what you find out.

You can still get chromate planting done in the US but they are few and far between.
As far as the home plating like Copy-Cad they don't use the same highly toxic chemicals. They are still dangerous but less so that real cadnium They is a post here someplace called Nuts and Bolts where a member has posted pictures of his home plated parts. He also outline the process. IIRC you can plant almost any shape it is a matter of setting up the piece so that the elctrical current flows evenly over over all surfaces. Once you have it plated you dip it in the yellow copy cad solution and it colors it yellow. __________________ '79 FJ40 33" MTRs, 2" OME, ' 96 FZJ80 Stock, OEM Rear Locker, CDL, OEM Hand Trottle, OEM Grab Bar, JDM Cooling Fan Consensus my ass... http://www.petitionproject.org/ |

No the plating will not get to a place that is covered. Kind of like painting. I don't see how any plating can get to a covered piece. but I'm not an expert. I know from experience that on the captured washer bolts the plating doesn't get in behind the washers all the time.

why dont you get some copper chloride and a copper anode, then connect up your battery and get some hardcore copper plating; what your plating is the cathode (positive)
