Why go with ACE paint????
I am going to be painting my 40 in the spring so I have been reading everyone’s threads on painting with the ACE rustoleum like product. The info on this site is unreal!!!! Anyway my question is why go with the ACE paint? Is it just because its cheap? I know they can color match it but if I have the color code cant a paint shop mix it up from that? Is it easier to work with? If it just the $ difference then to me it seems like its worth it to spend a little more for better paint. Especially with how much time goes into prep work. This will be my first auto paint job. I put myself through school doing commercial painting and have also painted houses with a spryer. So, although I don’t have any auto paint experience I do have a lot of painting under my belt. Any info or tips on this would really help.
Thanks..... __________________ 1974 FJ40 1994 FZJ80 2004 Tacoma TRD (gone to a new loving home) |

I do know that Ace safety blue is a dead on match for Horizon blue. (smurf blue)

It is. It's the light blue. I think it has a few different names.

horizon blue is what it was marketed as in the us. the actual japanese translation is horizontal. they are the same color.
as for why ace? it's a decent product at a good price. also, locally owned stores so you're not supporting corporate america/india/asia/wherever they farm all their crap out. __________________ seven cruisers and 3 of em run and four are for sale |

Well if this is the case then maybe my truck is not 808. Does anyone know what light blue they used in 1974? It does not look like the other "smurf blue" 40's I have seen. It is way lighter. Capri blue maybe?

Way lighter? Probably faded. It doesn't get much lighter than smurf blue. I personally love the faded smurf. Kinda like a worn pair of bluejeans.

I used it on the Pumpkin cuz it was tintable and could match the factory color where Rustoleum doesn't custom mix. I guess a regular oil based paint that gives rust prevention would be the same and would work. ACE is literally 1/4 mile from my house so it was the most convenient. For $29 and my results, I can't see why you would want to spend more unless you're using real auto paint and a sprayer.
Note: ACE can't use the auto color code to mix but they can scan and match. I bought a spray can from Tower Paint with the toyota color code, sprayed a piece of paper, then had them scan it. __________________ John 1983 VJ47 Crew Cab 1992 M-101 M-101 Trailer Tarps For Sale Finally I can get what I've always wanted....a used Toyota. |

jsaltlick,
Thanks for your info and I have been watching your tread since the beginning and it came out great. I guess I should have said I am going to be spraying and I really just wanted to know if in the long run spending a little more and getting something like a ppg product made for an auto application would wear better as well as be easier to work with. Anyone have any input on this? As for smurf blue I always thought that color 854 (sky blue 1975-1980) was the real "smurf blue" and the blues leading up to it like Horizontal blue and capri blue are lighter. I am comparing my color from under the gas tank cover where I would think there would be little to no fading. http://forum.ih8mud.com/paint-body/9...ode-chart.html __________________ 1974 FJ40 1994 FZJ80 2004 Tacoma TRD (gone to a new loving home) |

I used ace and sprayed it.
However, I also cleared it with an auto grade clear. this gives it wonderful shine and ruggedness. Clearing also allows for hi grit clearcoat sanding to remove orange peel and get a very glass like finish. If money was no issue than of coarse I would go for PPG or similar. But, I feel I got a great finish at a great price. And since this was my first REAL paint job, I figured if I really screw it up, I'm only into it $75.00 in paint and clear. It sounds like money is not a real issue, so I would go for the PPG. __________________ Yahsoo! 1969 Breathe FJ40 Currently in the middle of a ground up... 1976 Olive FJ40 finished as of May 2008 Faster Track Resto

Its not a dead on match but pretty close. The ace/rustoleum safety blue has more vibrant blue to it. The original color is a little duller and has a hint of green in it. The batch I had color matched is a little closer match but still isn't perfect.

roll and tip polyurethane
Depending on your color choice or willingness to mix you can get easypoxy or interlux single stage polyurethane paint. This is a marine paint and it has a good gloss but can with an additive be satin finish
Loads of boat sites with threads on doing roll and tip for these paints and poly is supposed to be really tough and easily repaired if you do want to spray you need to use the right PPE cause it is toxic Hatteras white is a nice cream color, fire red is pretty brightly red but a nice color too __________________ B Smith123 Chaos, panic, & disorder - my work here is done.
