what to do with pinholes around weld?
I got a patch welded above my fj60's tailgate. I need to touch it up, prime, skim coat with filler, etc--but the weld has small holes. I have pics, but not with me. It was done pretty well in that there was little to no warping, but there's some small holes, probably no more than 1mm in diameter. Maybe 5 or so of them.
How do I make sure there's no rust in the holes, and how do I seal these, preferably without further welding? I don't really want to take it into the welder and wait again. And no, I'm not going to buy a welder at the moment. Fun, but I don't have the time or space. |

IF the pin holes are 1mm or so, any skim of filler or even a quality glaze (Evercoat) would fill just fine. To abate any rust, use one of the many steel prep solutions containing phosphate, Eastwood, Zerorust's stuff, and even generic phos from a hardware store will all fit your needs.

I would not leave them unless you have a way to treat them and seal them on both sides, I would weld them anyway, they will be back in a year or two bubbling the paint. I know it's a PITA but do it anyway, Larry

light sand blasting on both sides of the weld. Then clean with POR-15 metal ready, then use POr-15 over the area. Then after it dries lightly scuff it. Then use the POR-15 compatible filler. After topcoat with a primer and colour.
That is how I did all my welds on my 60. __________________ -84 BJ60, Finally on the FN road! -91 FJ80, wife's ride Iron Butt award winner of the Cruise Moab 08 ! |

Cut off the fender, then the fender won't rust.
Permatex makes an anti-rust converter and protector, brush on, then lightly sand on topside, fill with body filler then paint. Underside coat with whatever you want to. JB weld
One site on welding body panels recommended using JB Weld having seen it used to seal holes in blocks I think it would stick for ever and it can be sanded drilled just like metal which is an advantage
