I put the roller in a zip lock bag and used it for 4 coats in 2 days no problem. I wouldn't push it much further than that though. I pulled it out a couple of days later and for the little bit they cost you might as well throw them out.

My coats have been sporadic so the last one dried out pretty good. Wet-sanded the whole things last night and it's still not coming out good for the orange peel. I"ve been using a heavy foam block as the block for the sandpaper. This is the cause of my problem. I was using it so I wouldn't put too much pressure on and burn thru the paint but I think it isn't rigid enough to shave off the orange peel effectively. I've only been burning through on some edges.

Never said I knew what I was doing.

haha,

I have no idea what I'm doing either. But you can't go to wrong here. It is always going to be a 2 foot paint job unless you really really want to do a lot of sanding.

I just used my hand and tried my best to leave even pressure. I figure the grit is so fine it won't make any divits or waves. If you look under (new to me 72) on the main fj 40 forum you can see a pic of my fender I did. That was with 5 coats and no glazing. But if you get close you can tell it has some runs a few spots of orange peel I forgot to address, etc.

Cool. Went to NAPA and loaded up on sandpaper. Gonna hit the garage right now and test out the problem areas. The tub is nice and smooth but the hood and the fenders look like my face in high school.....bumpy and drippy. I think I'll have this all done by Sunday.....(doubt it)

Sanding and at least one coat done today. That's the goal.

body is DONE!!!

Finished up the body this weekend. Started putting the lights, bezel etc back on. Start on interior tomorrow.

I sort of rushed towards the end so the are some orange peel spots. The beauty of this method is that I can go back and fix the spots easily at any time. Not going for a show truck anyway but looks amazing from 10 feet!!!! Very, very happy with the results!

These pictures suck cuz I had to use my camera phone. I'll get batteries for the good camera and take better ones. The M101 looks great too!

How are the fumes when dealing with this sort of paint?
Thanks

fumes are almost non-existent. I cracked the window in my garage and that's about it. The mineral spirit fumes were the worst and still not that bad. My tv/family room is directly above the garage and the heating systems are connected and my my never complained about any smell. That's why I couldn't spray.

better pics

got the good camera working. Reassembling the emblems, lights etc. Body panels came out really nice. Not thrilled with the job I did on the hood but that was my own fault and laziness.

All total I think I'm into the paint job for $200. ($80 of that was for custom spray cans to get to the small areas.)

A steal for the money. It's a nice 10 footer!

Nice job bro...

I'm done with mine as well, and into the "buff" mode. Gonna pick up some swirl remover and a final polish and giver a go. Mines a 2 foot job in some places, some places are factory mint...

Nice! I have so much going on that I had to finish up quickly. I'll be going back and hitting spots as time permits. The tub is a 2 footer but the front fenders and the hood are 10 footers at best. I want a truck that I can wheel so I'm also afraid of getting it too nice......

DONE!!!!! (almost)

Basically done. Just need to paint the doors and I'm very unmotivated to do the disassembly of them at this point so I'm taking some time off before I start those. Just need to paint the back side of the tire carrier but it's too cold out today to do that. It should tkae all of 10 minutes to finish that up.

Extremely happy with the results of a tiny financial investment and a total lack of skill.

Bows painted below:

top does look great on it. NatickDave was the PO so he could say where the top came from. It's very clean with no rips.

John,

Looks outstanding! Very creative solution doing the roller backed up with wet sanding, nice.

Both of my trucks are Toyota Orange as well.

Paint up of the 80 here: http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-te...aint-cm06.html

Nice work!

Mark

John,

The only way I can put it is that it pops! The color really makes the truck just jump into the foreground. Hood ornament looks fantastic, I hadn't seen that yet, along with all that shiny new hood hardware.

So, for those who are keeping track: It is a '72 factory softtop (FJ40L) sporting early marker lights on the fenders (new oem from toyota), hard doors off a 74 (I think) and an excellent condition old split hood that I got with my 45lwb project parts collection. It is running on 60 chrome wheels (don't forget me when the time comes to sell those John) and Old Man Emu suspension. The front bumper is LobsterFab, rear and sliders are homemade ('cuz ho's gotta slide, too!) Otherwise, very stock.

The top is one of the last from Specialty Top Company, which bought the dies from Kayline, then was bought by somebody else (SOR?) and is now defunct. They really are great. I chose that color because it was very close to the original fabric on the doors, which was all torn up of course. John, I might propose a straight swap for the brand new Paki top in grey based on how each look on our trucks. At least consider it for now...grey on orange and tan on olive just seems better than the reverse.
