Another bit of advice I have learned....skip the quart and go straight to the gallon of paint, especially if you are using custom color matched stuff. Even using the code they produce there will be slight color variations sometimes. Ask me how I know.

I did this several years back on a VW microbus and it looked great. I think I will try it on my ole 4-Runner.

I started on the top of my 40 today. Hit it with the orbital sander to take of all the old wax and scuffed up the old paint. Gave it a quick hose down and wiped it with a towel. Next i gave it a tac-cloth wipe down. Mixed Rustoleum glossy white with 50% mineral spirits. First coat went on with bunch of bubbles. I blew on them and they popped. Second coat after waiting 5 hours. Now to let it sit over night. I'll be wet sanding it in the morning with 800 grit. The two more coats if time allows me. If this works out I'll be doing whole 40 if I can find a ACE that would color match my old paint.
Stay tuned!

X2. A gallon is cheap enough anyway.

I thought about the photo thing but.....I thought you seen one roll on job you seen them all. Did 2 more coats. Had to paint outside due to construction going on at the house. Paint bubbles didn't pop as easy and i was left with chicken skin. That didn't stop me I painted another coat 5 hours later. I'll let it dry overnight and give it another 800 wet sand.
This time I'll take pics for those who are dieing for paint porn.
This time I'm painting inside.....I had better control of the paint that way. But I think this thing might work! It's going to take some time and effort but the quality of finish depends on how much sanding and painting I want to do.
Spoke to a paint shop guy in my neighborhood. He said Rustoleum will be going over to water base paint. No more enamel! He said automotive paint will be going water base also. I don't know if I can find someone to color match my 40 in time before they stop making it.

Can anyone comment about how these rustoleum paint jobs wear? I've read that the paint cracks or gets chalky soon. I also just read a post on Mud that says the rustoleum wont stick to primer. I'm getting very tempted... They're going to start putting up our new shop tomorrow... Maaco gave me a $4000 bid to do it wrong... I just want white, which should be pretty easy...

But... I've got little two kids, a full time job, and no car-painting experience.

So how long does it take per coat and wet sand? And if I do it, how long will my hard work last?

I found a body shop that said they'd mask off my 80 and paint it "dune beige" for $250 if I do all the prep work - sanding, etc myself. Can't beat that! I was all primed to do the Rustoleum thing, but that was going to cost me about $100, plus the time involved, plus the fact that Rustoleum probably won't wear as hard as auto paint.

Something to think about.
