Well cant find the Sand color around here and Home depot and Lowes cant figure out how to order it so Im going to Grainger and getting a gallon of this tomm in Dune tan its supposed to be tougher and ressist maor than the Proffesional but its also $47 a gallon. Trucks In the body shop getting the dents out should be done Fri or Sat then the painting begins.

Hey law man,

here's what i did. I went to home Depot and placed an Order at the service desk. They had to call Rustoleum (their customer service # is on their website) and order a case of the sand. Minimum order is a case, and a case is two gallons. Probably more than i need, but so is life.

Right now, Im stuck re-modeling my Bathroom every free Minute. Soon as that's done, Im going to start my final body work then paint.

My help spilled half of my 1 quart white and I still had enough to coat the roof with at least 6 coats maybe 7 so 1 gallon should be plenty for the rest. I tried that at my home depot and Lowes they couldnt figure it out. LOL I finaly told them look Im the one roller painting my truck and I think yall are the morons. But I think its going to work for the best because Im getting the industrial strength rustoleum one grade up from the professional In 1 gallon dune tan. After reading up the industrial dries in same time frame just made for painting heavy equipment and such. I tried to post the link last night but I just noticed its not up there. Truck will be back at the latest Sat. so should have 1st coats on by Sun.

I like this thread - think I am going to do this with the Pig.

Has anyone found a Rustoleum match for Pumpkin Orange?

Touch Up Paint For FJ60

Anyone know of a good place for touch-up paints for FJ60's?

I thought of my local Parts Chain store, but I'm not sure if they'd have touch-up paint for an 87?

Well here is the 5th and proably final coat for the roof. Abd shes back from the body shop looking good. Now only one problem I like the color of the primer they put on there. The shop told me they would do the whole truck in primer for me for $100 any draw backs to using primer as the main paint????

That looks really nice!

The ONLY thing that concerns me a little is how resistant Rustoleum would be to things like bugs hitting it at 75 mph, gasoline overflowing at the gas station, etc. Anybody have any reports of long-term satisfaction (or not) with this method?

I used the Industrial heavy equipment rustoleum Its supposed to be impact and chemical resistant! Time will tell the great thing is I bought a gallon and only used maybe a lil over a quart and it goes on fast and easy If I ever need to touch up!

TEXASLAWMAN - Any guesstimate how many hours you have in that job, just in the painting and wet-sanding?

I don't have a lot of spare time, so I was thinking about patching the OEM rack/rib holes and painting the roof first, then doing the rest of the truck one piece at a time, rather than trying to do the whole thing in one whack. Seems like wet-sanding and then putting one coat on the WHOLE truck would be a 3-4 hour job, at least... Does that sound about right, or does it go faster than that?

Well I only rolled on the white. I got 5 coats on sanded and all in two days its really pretty easy the time comes from the wait inbetween coats to dry. The tan I sprayed on using a hvlp gun. To roll on I mixed 50/50 with mineral spirits to spray on it was 80 paint 20 mineral spirits. I would have rolled it on but my friend offered up the sprayer. I will say this the roll on is smoother and has more gloss than the spray. The spray is more of a satin finish, neither have been wet sanded with 1500 or polished yet. To better answer your question about time It took me about 30 min each morning to wet sand and put on another coat then I drove it to work this was just for the roof though so the whole truck I would say 1 hour every second coat with wet sand. 30 min every coat in between.

So what color did you end up using and how did you acquire it? I have a couple of cans of Rusto "Sand" but it looks too peachy and I'm scared to put it on and hate it. I'd love to find something more in a tan color that's not soo lite like Almond or something.

nice job!

Thats what the consensus seems to be.

When i start painting Im planning on buying a Rustoleum "grey" to mix with the "sand". Im going to experiment with that and hopefully come up with something that is closer to the original color than the sand.

A few thoughts for you - in my area a store called Tractor Supply Company sells tractor paint - I believe it is basically the same as Rustoleum enamel. I painted an RV with it a few years ago - there were a lot more color options, and was around $20 a gallon. I added some enamel hardener (also at TSC) and a little paint thinner to spray it, but it would work thinned and rolled as well.

Just a few more color options for you...

What nap roller should be used for application of rustoleum? Smooth or a semi-rough? I've heard that you should put 2 coats on, wet sand, then repeat. Yes? No?
