However, she doesnt get to go all that often either...
Actually the flat bed option would be the BEST option. Shave a ton of weight, simplify some things, and I could leave the axels alone. The route I was thinking of going was gonna cost BIG MONEY is beefed axels, bigger tires and a ton of work stretching the wheel base. Jack and I talked about it, and it was a grim scenario for my check book.

Stretching the wheelbase??? I thought one of the issues WAS WB?

I think it's more a departure angle issue for the 60 series, they have a big ass.

Rusty is correct.
At least in my mind... stretching the wheel base with the overhang that I have would minimize that.
However, I would LOVE to avoid doing that. Im REALLY contemplating that flat bed option. The more I think about it, the more I see it as the BEST means to get where I want the rig to be with the LEAST amount of money and effort. Plus, once that platform is built and affixed, I can do a TON of stuff to set it up for what I need.
Im thinking tool boxes for storage, NO swing outs and keeping the tire and jerry cans at the back side of the cab...My mind is running wild with the possibilites.
Plus, if I do it right...the rig will still look nice and wont be all hacked up like that orange one. He is trying to sell that right now, and its HAMMERED.
Id lose the sleep space that I LOVE to rub noses in, but...like Jack and I had talked about...everything is a compromise.

Gotta get a bender though!!!!!

K

Thanks for posting that pic up Rusty!

So I don't get it. Why not just cut off the piece thar wraps around off your rear bumper now and build up some more burly protection and call it a day? Do you not want to smash the rear of the body or just break parts in general? I started thinking the way I *think* you are after I broke the rear shaft at Rubicon. I didn't want to hold anyone or any rigs up on the run, but it could have happened to anyone at anytime on any trail. After thinking about it, I think we have both been pretty fortunate on breakage given the weight and abuse we have dealt the 60's. Me even more so with stock axles in the front. . .

Just get gears dude, it is beyond a night and day difference on the trail. If you chop it up, I think you are going to lose 90% of what you love in the wagon. I could be way off though. . .

D,
Its a combination of both the size of the rig and the weight of the rig that is the issue and I feel that it limits what I can do with the rig. Im of the opinion that if these two things could happen with this rig, it would be more manuverable, and less prone to break. If I did a full exo cage, Id be less concerned with what is scraping and slamming and be more comfortable, but its still a really HEAVY rig that is (IMO) gonna be more apt to break when crawling on trails like the Rubicon and also, require much more attention in the tight spots. For ME anyway...You might not experience the same phenominon, but (especially that last run) I felt like a bull in a china shop in that rig. As you stated though, the gear reduction may cause everything to change by allowing for more control.
This isnt a recent issue Ive been struggling with.

Nothing can happen till the Vortec goes in.

BTW, you broke your axel?!

Yep, I busted a long side rear. . . I'm getting the Poly's while I kick around the idea of a complete rear axle swap.

I see what you are saying on the body and weight, but if you add an exocage you may not bend and scrape body panels but you will be on your side alot faster because of it. I definitely don't feel the size disadvantage as much, but then again look at my front ARB and the tubes are gouged up pretty good from running into ledges and rocks. The same goes for the rear bumper and lower quarter panels. I figure once I trim up the rear quarter panels and add some totally tubular protection I'll just bash on that and be fine with it.

So are you keeping it, or still for sale?

Dylan

Keeping it!
Im probably gonna get a bender soon and re build a new bumper out of tubing and increase the 1/4 protection, so if you know anyone who might be interested in buying my bumper.
Aside from that...Im just gonna wheel it, enjoy it and not be so concerned about what is hitting where. It'll get banged up and when that happens, Ill chop and or repair as needed.

What rear axel are you considering?
I read a little bit about you break in the 60's forum.
I assume youre ready to wheel again? Lets GO!

K

What? I told you I'd buy it.

That Smitty built POS on my rig is embarrassing.

Ive always HATED those bumpers!
I thought you were heading out of town?

BTW, I Pounded out that dent in the rear 1/4...its actaully came out decent. I was surprised. Aside from the scratches, you really wouldnt notice it at first glance.

Yeah I'd even put a stock bumper rather than the Smitty POS. You should hurry up and get a tube bender so I can buy your cool looking bumper.

Not leaving until after the holiday so we can avoid traffic.

Good to hear the rear quarter was an easy fix. Have you ever considered a Krylon Paint job? It makes touch easy. Speaking of which I still need to slap some more bondo on my PS rear quarter and give it a fresh coat of hunter Green

Do 60 series axels work under a 40?
What is the modification process like?

Chicago, as I have not yet tackled the bumper biuld. I would be interested in your rear bumper if no one else replies. Just let me know how much, etc. Thanks and have a good 4th.
David.

Also, yes, 60 axles work under a 40. When I swapped out my axles ,I gave mine to a guy I knew to use under his 40. From what I could gather he just turned the front slightley and slung it under. The rear was even easier by just welding new perches on top and bolting her up.

Will do on the bumper.
The only thing that I was thinking...my rear 1/4 are chopped, so that will affect both you and Rusty.
Nothing too terrible, but something to think about.
If Rusty doesnt want to buy it, Ill hit you up for sure. He does have first dibs though.

Chopping sheet metal is no problem on my cruiser. She isn't that pretty to begin with. Thanks for giving me a shot at it.

My 1/4's are pretty well smashed up anyway so hacking them off wouldn't be an issue.

Well ya know your already sprung over so take 18 inches off the ass and go from there bro thats my plan with my 60 and that will take some weight off and shorten it at the same time like the looks of that flatbed but im old school keep as much of the original look as possible and go for it anyway just my 2 cents bro
