Well,
I could tell you all about replacing the front output bearing on the transfer case of the 80, dropping the case as I was removing it, buggering up a flange stud and breaking a $190.00 sensor in the process . Not being able to find a die for the stud (11mmX 1 thread pitch), filing it back into shape, blowing a lower extremity getting t-case remounted, not being able to finish because the $190 sensor is located on top of the t-case, so until I can get one (looking for one used now) the t-case is being supported by straps, the drivelines are still out, the skid plate is lying on the floor.
So yeah, I had a great weekend.
That's what I have been up to.
Jack

Don't I know it. It's probably because I don't forward chain emails
I forget that you live that close, I appreciate the offer, I just might have to take you up on that the next time I think I can lift heavy things...

Guess I could tell you about my move, changing jobs for the wife and I, and all the drama. But that would be just like real life. I come here for entertainment.... That's why I like Jack..
Wheeling and wrenching are for people who have time to live life, rather than just ride the wave and hope for a sandy beach and a soft landing, rather than the breakers and rocks like what usually happens.

Running out of things to remove from the 55. Gas tank on the floor by this weekend. I've got an engine at a friends house, a NV4500 being built in the north valleys, and the fun part of a 203 in my dad's garage down in california. Probably should order the adapter soon. PS box from a 60 sitting on my floor. Sorting out how I want to rebuild the rockers and body mounts now. Too bad I don't know what's practical and what isn't. Keith, I may need to drag you down here to advise...
slow progress.

Hummm. As long as we are sharing.
I've been battling the DS window on the 100. Toyota wants you to buy a $250 window if you break the $5 plastic tab that attaches it to the regulator. Found a used set at Crusier Solutions for $20, got them and they still had all the glass and RTV in them, spent 2 hrs figuring out how to clean them up with out destroying them, destroyed one in the process, then replaced the broken one, let the glue set for a couple of days before I tested the window action only to find out the jam switch needs to be re calibrated, found a website that had the FSM in PDF as a free download so I'll be trying that tonight.
In comparison the 40 is moving along pretty well except that I spent a couple of hours trying to figure out how to get the Longfields apart so I could clean out the grease and oil slurry in them, turns out the answer was a bigger hammer. I ran the procedure for aligning the birfs with the SST and have the "correct" shim thicknesses, so the front axle should go back together this week, I figure can do one side a night, then all I have to do is pull the front springs and add a leaf or two back in and the 40 will be ready to go except for the anti wrap bar.
I'm afraid to start anything on the 60 , but it needs a pan gasket and seals or hoses or something in the PS pump.
And the doctor says I need another operation on my wrist maybe I should have listened about the weight restrictions
OTOH I still have a job, a house, and a family so I'm doing better than a lot of other folks.

Thanks for sharing everone, now I don't feel so bad. Seems like everyone's projects are putting up the good fight.
RustyDan, are using Marlin's new seals in the front axle of the 40?

Yeah, I got the whole knuckle service kit with the uber tuff seals from Marlin. I'd like to go for a long time with no oil puke on the knuckles.
The good news is if anybody needs a hand with a knuckle service I pretty much have the procedure memorized.
BTW I hope you didn't undo the surgery you had this winter.

Good deal on the front axle. I am the point where I am debating on whether I want to go with Toy axles on Drippy. I really hate the greasy mess that is Toy front axles. I have both the stock axle and a complete '84 front mini axle, so I have two to choose from/build, but I just don't know if I want to put the money into them. I might go dana. I might be able to score a built d44 with gears/arb, etc. from a buddy or I just might go all the way and do a 60 front. Depends on whether I can find a deal or not.
Me too. I think I am pretty good, I have a bionic lower abdomen now, it's all fiber/mesh re-inforced.

Wouldn't the D44 be a downgrade in terms of strength?

Hey Fellas...hope you don't mind if I share too. Sorry to hear about your debacle Jack, I'm feeling ya. I've had frustration lately with my 40. It runs good with the TBI going now, in fact it runs like a whipped dog. I love driving it, even if the steering is sloppy as hell! I decided several weeks back that I ought to finally get the thing registered and street legal - you know I've owned it for a long time and gotten to drive it very little. Anyway, got a temp moving permit from DMV and took it for emissions test. Guy lifted the hood and said, "Uhhhh......uhhhhhhhh.......you got a special letter for that engine?" (that's an actual quote ). My reply, "Uhhhh......"
I have since learned that I need a letter from DMV for the engine swap (chevy 350 by previous owner) before anyone will even test it. The process with the DMV was more than I care to re-tell here, but eventually I scored the letter and they even agreed to smog it to '68 standards rather than '86 standards which would have really set me back. So, with letter in hand and hope in my heart, back to the emission place I went. And failed. To make an already long story short, I have tested it now 3 times and failed. The last test was close. I had reconnected the EGR, installed a the charcoal cannister and installed a PCV valve as well as fixed a couple exhaust leaks. It's funny...with computer controlled fuel injection I thought smog would be a breeze. My carbon monoxide is too high now...everything else is in range. Seriously stumped and frustrated. 'Bout ready to just tear it down and start the frame-off I've been fantasizing about for so long....oh wait, I'll need a small fortune to pull that off . With that said I will echo others comments, at least I've got a decent job and my family is happy and healthy...all the rest is just gravy after that.

I guess I'd better try to preserve the california BAR sticker on mine...I think that's why they never gave me any trouble over the 71 vintage 350. I really wanted to repaint that door...

Dana 44's and Toyota mini axles are pretty much a wash as far as strength. If you spend the big bucks and buy 30 spline Longfields for the front (roughly $600+), then technically it is stronger than even the best D44 alloy axles. There is just more material to work with. The advantage to the D44 is turning radius, bigger brakes, slightly stronger r & p, stronger internal hub design, width, and no f'ing greasy closed knuckle crap. Plus the one I might be able to get from my buddy already has 4.56's, ARB and Moser axles.

No my back is fine, I had double inguinal hernias. So I had the pleasure of have both of them fixed at the same time. The doctor put in the mesh reinforcement stuff to prevent that from happening the next time.
Sorry to hear about the mower and glad to hear that you have your house back.

Carbon Monoxide....I think that means the Cat isn't working right. If it's plugged, too far back to get lit, or your mixture is over-rich I think those are the key points.
Have you taken it out and run it like you stole it lately? Also, changing the oil if it's old. Use a heavier weight than normal in case you have a little oil burning going on. Make sure the thermostat is a 195, and the plugs/wires are in good order.

Gotcha all beat: Had to have...yes have a rear pinion bearing installed, bearings, rear axle bearings both sides, rear drive shaft and the clincher: A new t-case.
I hope this is IT for an effing while.
But the work did enable me to do: Hole in the Rock Trail, Beef Basin, Lockhart Basin/Canyon, Canyonlands, Moab, Hells Revenge, Steel Bender, Bull Canyon, White Rim Trail and more. Thank God for getting to wheel it post repair expense: Don't think there is enough tequila available otherwise .

So a t-case for the 100 was probably pretty cheap right.

What were your symptoms on the bearing? I only ask because since the Nevada Trophy, I have a slight "Ping" sometimes when I go into reverse.
I tried telling Spresso to go Atlas...To illustrate the degree of his sickness he replied, "Doesn't fit between the frame rails."
Gotta love it.

Yeah, but the good news it that it gave me access to a sensor, while I look for one.

I have a noticeable driveline vibration. I have removed the front driveline and it is smooth, I have tried stock driveshaft (in phase/out of phase), Slee's DC driveshaft, Ali's Taco DC driveshaft. Ali's was the smoothest (even though it was too short).
While he was here, I crawled under both of them and my front output on the t-case had probably twice as much movement as Ali's. I have replaced the bearing now and it easily cut the movement in half, so I am hoping that was the problem.
If this doesn't fix it, I am going to source a Taco DC shaft. If that doesn't fix it, then I might try buying a new stock rear shaft. If that doesn't fix it, then I am just going to drive it until something breaks...

Jack...your vibe symptom, as we have discussed, is the same as mine. 100% velvet smooth before the 4.88 conversion (all new OEM u-joints at that time too). The new t-case, drive-shaft, rear end bearings and set-up(!!!) have eliminated all vibes except when accelerating between 60-72mph.
As you, I found by removing the front drive shaft it all went away. I'm, once I get back to Ali's or home remove the front shaft again and test it along with checking the rear pinion flange angle.
I subscribed, after taking it to Sean last summer ( ) and Driveline Specialties (yeah...right ) on Glendale, to just letting it eventually blow up. Well that strategy gets damn expensive and it probably won't disclose the real issue...only the downstream results from the vibe itself.
I figure as a real last resort I'll convert the damn thing to pt 4wd...not what I want but I can't do this again!
Maybe I need to put that effing cast iron rubber mounted OEM frame dampener back on

You removed the flux capacitor?
Well there you go.
I have to wonder if it is the drive line angle that is causing your issues. I don't recall, does the front DL have a double Cardon joint?
Also have you guys considered asking Robbie if he has any insight?
