HOT diffs?
Just wondering if anyone know about this.
A friend of mine just re geared his 85 mini and installed a locker (lunch box type), and now says that his diff "get pretty warm".
This caused me some pause... Should they be getting noticeably very warm to the touch through the housing?
I can see that happening till the pattern gets cut, but it sounds as if its getting pretty hot.
Think it might be set a little too tight?
He also said that his Drive shaft is really tight getting in...
Seems kinda off somehow.

What do you mean "his drive shaft is really tight getting in"? Possibly too much grease in the drive shaft yoke preventing the slip joint from collapsing all the way?
It is best to go through a new R&P break-in. Transmission break-in proceedureS
And yes...the diff will be very warm if not somewhat hot to the touch on a brand new aftermarket R&P set-up...depending how far he drove it initially.

When you install a new set of gears they say you're suppose to drive easy and no longer than 15 minutes at a time (between cool downs) for the first 500 miles. I've alos heard of chaning the gear oil after 2,000.

I guess that I didnt really remember that mine got warm/ hot like that...
He actually wrote me back and clarified. Said that its WARM, but not hot, and the drive shaft wasnt and tighter than it was before...so I guess its all good.
(go ahead Ken...add youre smart ass remarks. There is a bunch of them in this!)
