When I looked at it, to me it looked there were two leafs added to each pack, both in upper and lower in the stack.

Hmm. That could be interesting. I'd like to see how long the re-arched springs hold up.

I forgot to ask when it was done. He's meeting me today to pick up his plates I'll try to remember to ask then.

Does anybody know if the 75 FJ40 thirds will work with the 84 FJ60?

Yes they will but I would not use them as the pinions in 75 were coarse spline and thus weaker than later gearsets.
The best swap for 4.11 gearing is 1978. After that 88-90. Good luck.

I had my first "Autolocker" moment this morning.
It was still better than driving a car the size of a toaster to work with all the SUV's.

What happened?
Difficult turning in the front end, or did it unload on you?

I turned onto McCarren from Longley. Longley had been sanded, McCarren hadn't. As I made the turn I just touched the gas and the rear end locked up, the back end started to overtake the front end and I was all the way over in the S bound lane, then I was heading for the road that goes around Rattle Snake. I scared the shit out of some guy that was waiting at the bus stop there. I was just doing the Tokyo slide thing and cranking the wheel back and forth. I finally gave it a little brake which resulted in the locker opening up and me getting a little control over the truck. Lesson learned.
In other news I just ordered a FT2800 for the truck. I was really impressed with yours when we installed it.

That is what you get for hot rodding a rig of that caliber!
Serves you right.
Where'd you order from? How much did you pick it up for?
What antenna did you get? Did you get the brifs done on the 40? what's your PIN number on your credit card?

Where are you going to mount the 2800 Dan? I love that radio and it fits great in the 60.

The rig has a single din radio with a CB mounted in the second din slot, the plan is to ditch the CB or relocate it and put the 2800 in the din slot. I might need to add a cooling fan for the heat sink.

If you don't want to mess with a fan behind the dash, you could mount it above the rear view mirror. I like the radio up there, it is easy to glance up and check it out plus running the cable for the antenna is easy to run along the top of the windows. I'll get a pic if you want, I copied the idea from pismojim.

Hey D,
How did you end up mounting that? When I saw it (and paid attention) it was a "temporary" install at that time. I was REALLY paying attention at that time, cuz that was the "BUSTED" run to Deer Valley, and that 2M saved my ass. That was when I became a convert.
Im still not too crazy about where mine is. The display gets dusty as its facing up.
Its mounted on the side of the center console where behind the e brake. I was thinking about making a bracket that comes off the front of the center console.
If you wouldnt mind, Id love to see the pics of the final install on yours.

X2 I have an NMO mount already drilled in the roof so it would be a short run to the rear view mirror.

That's good stuff!! I love days like that.....and I love my day today. I just took the truck over to a little spot on base and loaded her down with scrap steel and all sorts of stuff. My collection goes from scrap tubing and flat steel to a hydraulic motor off one of these big military rigs. I didn't want the whole motor, I just wanted the shifter off of it, but I had not tools to remove it. GOOD DAY FO SHO!!!

The brown truck of happiness showed up with my radio.
Dylan, how is the radio bracket attached?

I used a piece of 1/8" ish aluminum that is shown in tension with the block of wood shimmed in. I think there are 3 small bolts that fasten the piece of aluminum to the rear view mirror mount. There is enough tension in the aluminum that radio does not move at all. The bracket pivots on the piece of aluminum and is double nut'd (that's not a word) to a bolt through the aluminum so that it can swivel back and forth from the driver to passenger side. Sorry for the long winded response. . . .

Thanks. I think you used just enough words. Even made one up to suit the occasion.

I think my brain has formulated a plan. Being kind of a small pot it took awhile to percolate a plan in it. I'm just going to throw it out here to see what the collective wisdom thinks about it.
I think what I'm going to do is swap the differentials with the 4.88 gears and Detroit lockers from the FJ60 into the FJ40 and the differentials with the ARB lockers with the 4.11 gears from the FJ40 into the FJ60.
Here is why; The FJ40 needs lower gearing because I want to go to a larger tire size, the FJ60 needs higher gearing because it will see a lot more highway miles.
The auto lockers will be a lot easier to deal with on a mostly trail rig, actually they may be better than selectable lockers on the FJ40.
The FJ40 has Longfields which will take the auto locker "snap" better than the stock birfs on the FJ60
It's basically free, all it will cost is a few gallons of gear lube and some Permatex gasket maker.
Comments?

Why do you need lower gears in your 40, don't you still have the toybox and Orion?
It would be ideal to have the 4.88's and ARB's in the 60 with the 4.11's and detroits in the 40 IMO. It would keep a stonger gear set in the 40 (more hardcore rig) and give you some good grunt in the 60 for the occasional hard trail. Unfortunetly this means swapping ring and pinions and introduces $$ into the picture.
I hate decisions like this. . .

Im gonna take a stab and say that it is because the 40 is primarily on the more heavy duty TRAILS where lockers are pretty much always used. So less of a need for OPEN diffs.
The beauty of the selectable locker is the ability to have open diffs on the road, and lock em up when on the trail.
the 60 (from what it seems) will be used for more distance/ expedition type wheeling where there will not be a need for full time lockers.
Why not use the ARB's on both...theyre FU*KING EXPENSIVE. Most people would love to have ARB's, but theyre cost prohibitive. Personally, I LOVE my auto lockers, expecially in the rear. However, I compromised on the front. I would actaully preferred ARB's in the front, but I didnt want to spend the money. If you do Longs, a lunchbox locker (aussie, lockright) AAAAAND a basic hydro assist youll STILL be money ahead than what an arb with install and longs would cost.
So, when I do my V8, Ill be adding the ram assist too.
Something like that...
