Cool thing, is that after sitting for a couple of days, and getting the crap sprayed out of it at the car wash, it fired right up. So that's a good sign.

Great!
The first time I cleaned the 40 it went from drippy to "heavy flow" I guess the crud was sealing the engine from the outside.

Whatever you do, don't put havoline oil in it. I've found that the off name brands, Havoline, Exxon, etc sometimes cause a seeping gasket to pour. Castrol, Quaker State and Valvoline haven't caused me the same issues.
Do some research. Lots of the buick motors were using rope type main seals till their demise from manufacturing. IF it's got rope seals, use an oil like an SF type. Walmart and a couple others sell oil rated that way, it's marked for 1980 and older vehicles. It has fewer detergents and supposedly an additive that helps the rope seal stay swelled up, but not disintegrating.
Once I get settled, I'll be happy to take that motor apart for you and walk you through the re-ring/gasket/bearing process to have an almost new engine. A little baffling in the pan goes a long way toward keeping those motors alive, also an accumulator. The big deal is that the oil pump is in the front cover and has to suck through a long tube to keep the oil in the pump. Nothing major, it just needs a little help.
A front seal on that tranny will cure that drip on the front driveline, unless it's the cooling lines, and those are an easy fix.
I've also got a full can of carburetor dip you are welcome to use. A gasket kit, a couple days of soaking and it will look like new. Then I've got a book on how to tune them...

Sweet. I might have to take you up on that. I have been thinking about re-gasketing the motor. When I get a few minutes, I am going to check over the cooling lines on the tranny, I think that is where it is seeping, I think I might have to pull the t-case to seal the adapter up also. Someone used a lot of the orange RTV, I have found that the grey stuff works much better on aluminum mating surfaces.

Believe me, if I could have found the right Jeep, I would have been all over it. I still really want a TJ Unlimited, problem is, they are 15k plus just to buy, don't get me started on what it cost to build one like I would want to.
This way I can get into the rocks like all of the other 20 something year old punks in their cheap toyota and have very little invested. This will allow me to play with very little investment. Or so I hope...

The last trip I took to the Rubicon made me want to sell my mini truck and get an Early Bronco or D90 or something. Anything but a mini truck.

NOPE...Not for real...Just dishing back is all.I cant seem to use the smiles, or use the enter button on this site, so I can see where it would seem that I was lacking a sense of humor. I dont care about what rig a person drives either...they all get modified in the end to do what you want.FWIW, Jack had come to tow my SORRY ASS home this past summer off of a relatively TAME trail. No hard feelings I hope...I was just giving you a little rub back is all.Keith

You might want to hit up Poor Boy. He had a set of dual cases and a dual case X-member for sale a bit back. I know you probably don't want to jump right into that yet, and get it running good and all, but figured I'd throw it out there.
And why would you need the doors to shut??? Minis look better DOORLESS with tubes all over the place. Let's get it ready for the modified stock class in June for W.E. ROCK!!!!

I thought about PB's dual case crossmember, but...the adapter between the tranny and t-case is some kind of old school thing that of course is not made anymore. Anyway, it is as long as an additional case (at least). The stock crossmember has been moved back to accomodate the adapter. So, because this trucks sole purpose is rocks/trails, I am just going to stick some 4.7's in the single case. Dual cases would be really long. Not that I don't have the room, the truck is a long bed. Originally, I was going to dual case it, but I think I am going to try the 4.7's first.
When you are crossing the rivers on Fordyce, and that toasty warm bath water is running through the cab, then you will appreciate the doors closing.
Besides, cheap, low and reliable is the goal for "Drippy."

Gotcha, I didn't know what his set up was, just remembered it was up for grabs.
I don't blame you on throwing the 4.7's in the 1 case. I have a buddy here in Fallon that did the same thing. He had stock gears, 4.7's, 33's and he wheeled the hell out of it. He was going to bump to 35's, but he sold it. He said the there was a few times that he would have like to have the 2.28's and 4.7's, but not enough to screw with duals, crossmembers and driveline changes.
And I know what you mean about the doors, this last summer we crossed a few creeks where my a$$ was soaked! I just try to look tough for the chicks!!!!

I had duals in my 4runner, and liked them very much. The gear choices were awesome, problem was that because it was a v6 truck the adapters and upgraded 23 spline stuff added up quick $$. With this one being an automatic, I get to "cheat" more and I think that a single 4.7 case will work just fine.
My buddy Bill, YJ posted above, had a 3spd auto in that jeep with a 4.3 atlas, 4.56's and both 36 swampers and 37 MTR's, it worked great in the rocks. Another friend had a klune v/beefed 231 in his cherokee, with an automatic, he ended up selling it and putting a 4.3 atlas in. Liked it much better.
Dual cases help tremendously with drivelines in minis because stock the front shaft is pretty short, so the angles are steep when you lift them. When you dual it, then you add six or so inches to the front driveshaft which helps with the angles. Since the adapter on this truck is at least that long, I have the needed driveline length already.
The plan is to take the cv from the front shaft and have it installed on the rear shaft, and take the flanges from the rear shaft and build a "square" front drive shaft out of 2x2 tubing. Read cheap.

Gotta go with a square front shaft! That's a given.
I had a set of 4.7's before I sold my 4Runner. I was going to leave it single cased too, but ended up selling it to a guy down in Placerville. I can't remember who has those gears now???

If so, good one.
If not even funnier.

Well it was purely an accident, but you know if you're mind goes that way...well then.

You really have to tell the tale of your engine hoisting/porch decorating tale.
I still laugh when I think about you spending the day doing something just like I would do..

That is a much better verbal tale than written. It's hard to write the frustration.

Well, the other day, I was looking on Craigslist and found an '84 front axle out of a 4runner complete hub to hub, for $130 bucks. So I went and picked it up.
My '79 front axle does not have any kind of factory truss, while the '84-'85's have a full truss from pumpkin to swivel ball. Plus the vented brake conversion is easier on the later model axles, the '79-'80 axles are unique and make the conversion a little more difficult. My axle has around 225k miles, while the '84 supposedly has less than 100k. Now I have a lot of extra parts and I can "build" the '84 axle and when it's time, I can slide it under the truck.
I also got the guy to throw in the stock front cv drive shaft from the truck. They are the later model flange bolt pattern and have the full flexability. The stock cv and spline engagement are worn out on Drippy. Good times...

I saw that axle on there the other day, not a bad deal.
I wish you would have bought this thing last year when I still had my 84 4Runner. I had all kinds of parts for those things. A few extra drivetrain parts, 22RE long blocks(not that it matters because of your v-6), and a bunch of other junk.
