Well, today was fruitful! I am the new owner of a np203 and 205 x-fer case. I have been thinking for a bit about my case options, and I originally wanted to go with a D300. The research has led me to see that in order to make the 300 tough enough for my right foot, it will cost a good amount of money.....inputs/outputs, 4.1 gears etc. Yes the 300 is shorter, but I plan on stretching the wheelbase a good bit, and the new Gen 2 doubler kits are up to 3 inches shorter. And seeing as how I got the 203/205 for a "good deal", I can't justify not using it. Just like Jack keeps stressing with Drippy.....CHEAP!!!! Military pay for now doesn't get me to the Atlas/Stak tax bracket!

On a related note, I might have a good line on a complete Chevy truck with dana 60's F/R. The fellow said that he would talk to his nephew about it, but he is pretty sure it is "running", but not driveable. He also told me that ole boy is hurting for money and will probably let it go for hardly nothing. If the deal goes good, I am going to take what I need, mainly the front and possibly rear, and possibly the trans, depending on what it is. My buddy just grabbed an old J20 Gladiator truck and wants a SBC for it, so he is wanting the motor. Everyone cross your fingers for me.

I have ranted about this junk enough for now, I tried to post pics earlier, but for some reason my pics keep saying "upload of file failed"????????

I think you are way better off with a 203/205, I have seen too many 300's break.

Also, (not that it matters) but only a handfull of GMC's ever came with a 60 rear, and those were late 60's early 70's era trucks. Later on GMC used some d70's in SRW. Chevy's used a 14bolt almost exclusively. So I would confirm that it is a 60 and not a HD d44 front. The hd 44 from the early trucks had a very large external hub style that at first glance looks like a 60.

Definately think the 203/205 combo is better. With the gears, inputs, outputs and all with a 300, I could buy an Atlas or a Stak. Sepereated the range box from the 203 after work last night, probably could have got some more done, but Miller Lite got in the way.....

The guy told me that the truck was being built into a crawler and the axles were swapped in. I asked him about it being a 44 and he said he swapped in a 60 and as for the rear, could be a white rabbit chevy or a dodge/ford????? Hopefully this next week I can find out the skinny on it.

OK, just got back from Cali, the Hammers were awsome, had a f'ing blast!

My 40 was used in a movie last week as a prop, my went to pick it up and on the way home the motor blew, rod punched the pan, nice work honey!! We were putting the SBC in this week anyways, so no big deal.

We got home from SoCal yesterday at 3 PM or so and the motor is almost ready to be pulled. Went ahead and pulled to hardtop and cage out and the hood off to make it easier to work with in the garage. After everything is pulled it is getting a bath underneath and in the engine compartment. If it wasn't dirty before(which it was), after a blown motor, it is very messy.

Do your self a favor and pull the radiator and front apron, it's only takes a few minutes and it makes life so much easier.

HAHA!! Wifey was asking if I liked her fresh manicure!!

Instead of buying expensive degreaser for the pressure washer, a buddy told me to grab some oven cleaner from the dollar store, about 10 bucks worth. Me and him just sprayed the ever living $hit out of that baby, and I am coating it before work in the AM and one more before we pressure wash it.

Yeah, it's not bueno for aluminum. I have never thought of oven degreaser because my pops has always gotten industrial degreaser from the coal mines....never had to buy any.

As soon as I get to the house I am going to spray a fresh coat on there and take the pressure washer to her.

First order of business is getting the power steering box in and a steering rod in place. I still want to be able to steer her around the shop, plus it will give me some good ideas on tolerances between rod and frame and manifolds, etc. It will also give me a chance to see where I can brace some stuff up at before the new radiator mount and all that stuff is in.

I have a Saginaw box from a J-20, which from what I understand is the HD one with a beefy worm gear. Lock to lock is 2.75, gotta be careful with those freeway lane changes....they might be a little quick. Fallon Dan has a camaro steering column I can grab too, might use it.

Just a little update. It's chopped down to just the cowl now, floorboards, complete front end, steering, EVERYTHING!!!! I'm picking up the tires this weekend....42 TSL's and my 8" hydro ram for the FULL HYDRO!!! I have a 12 ft stick of 2" aluminum stock that might get sleeved for my lower links, and there is a chance that it may get link'd in the front also. Picking up some other parts this weekend too, gears, heims, misc. stuff here and there.

Gotta get cleaned up, just got done yanking out the wiring harness. Calling a guy this week to see about a 5.3 vortec. One of my buddies just put one in his buggy and the guy reflashed it, ran it to a 2 plug hook up, all for around 1300 bucks.....NOT BAD, and Bryans is TOUGH!!!

Happy wheeling this weekend boys, if any of you aren't going on the run with the club, we will be at MoonRocks all day saturday.

Quick question about the cut and turn. Since this one is gonna be link'd, and low slung, do I need to do it? It still has a few degrees up to go before it runs over good caster. Tell me something fellas

For a trailer queen? I don't think so, but there are greater minds than mine on this topic.

You only need to do the c & t if you are trying to turn the pinion up to relieve the u-joint angle and then turn it so that you have some caster. With dual cases and the extra wheelbase you are shooting for, I think you are going to be ok.

By the way, I agree with Keith, wowwwww.

Jack

It's good to hear I have one less thing to worry about!!! The doubler kit went out the window. I am going with the original d300 plan. I have one now that is in really good shape. I have a tentative plan($$$ allowing) to use the 300 I have, and at the end of the build throw down on a stak 300. If not, I'll just build this one up tough with the outputs and gears. I am also going to get the longer adapter from AA, that will help driveline angle and trans pan issues.

Speaking of the trans pan/drive shaft issues. How far to the driver side have you guys seen the engine mounted? I need to get it WAYYYY over for the ds to clear somewhat. What's the max???

Oh yeah, what about this thing here. It would eliminate the trouble of making my own and I could just box it in on the front and back myself. Nice and flat for link tabs on top!! Should be a good base to build the hydro ram basket too!!
