HAM, July 19!

IM DOING IT!
July 19, Im gonna take the test and make the plunge!
If anyone else is interested who isnt already licensed...Its at the Carson Valley inn in Minden. I can post contact info if needed.
A question for the geeks...
Are there questions on the actual test regarding the formulas?
Im just wondering if that is something that I need to know COLD or not...

I think I remember the Volts X Amps = Watts equation/relationship as a question. IIRC there wasn't really any math to do but you do need to know the relationships of the electronic portions. Just study/know Chapter 2 for this portion of the test.

Im pretty good with "test memorization" technique...nursing school.
However, the application in this case without any hands on experience...I hope Ill learn more after I get involved.
Seems to be a lot of information that isnt entirely applicable for the "new" user...
Oh well...Ill get what I need from it to operate and learn more as I go.

Good luck on the test.
As far as how much theory you need to know in the Real World ®, it's handy to know about good grounding practice and a few other essentials but with a little help you can get by with out knowing much electrical theory at all.

Yeah...
Im pretty good with the blood and guts type stuff.
However, I learned that in the "field"...Im still bound by my scope of practice as an RN. For expample... Lets say you got squished in a roll over, and say you had a pneumo (puncutred lung)...I may be able to dx that, and also be able to insert an emergent chest tube, but when "real" help arrives...I could potentially lose my license over the incident as that is ABOVE my scope of practice. Even starting an IV requires a dr's order...I could do basic life safety measures "legally"
BTW, I just made the open heart surgery team!!!!!
very BIG DEAL for me. Very intense. Ill be taking a LOT more call, but that means A LOT more MONEY too.
Im just waiting for my PM shift to get covered, then i go to day shift and start the training for that. I cant WAIT!

As far as the HAM test, is it on the computer, or is it hand written?
Is it the same questions from the book and QRZ pracitce tests?

Hand written unless they've changed it since 1-year ago. Yep...same questions from the current ARRL License Manual.

Liability in accidents is pretty well covered by Good Samaritan laws. If you can save a life, do it.

I was of the impression (at least after discussing it with the anesthesiologist's here) that if medically trained, the good samaritan scope becomes narrower. They demonstrated using a gelco as an EMERGENT chest tube, but backed it up with the personal liability consequences of the procedure...
Youre right though...If I can save someone it should be done regardless!

It's a multiple choice test with a bubble sheet for your answers, just like High School.

The QRZ test questions come straight from the ARRL question test pool. If you are doing the test randomly you might go back and take them sequentially to make sure you see all the questions.

Know the rules and the laws, it seems like most questions on the test are from there. My tech test had 1 question where you had to apply Ohm's Law. It was shockingly easy. If you have access to Gordon West's book and quick read through that will net you a pass. If it's the ARRL tome, that's heavy sledding to get to the stuff that's actually on the test.

Everybody I've talked to had the question about rebroadcasting music from the Space Shuttle (legal), otherwise any music over the ham frequencies is forbotten.

I studied for my General on HamtestOnline and didn't miss a question on the exam. That study method rocks, but you have to pay for it.

Im studying from QRZ, and the AARL book that I borrowed from Rusty TLC.
The QRZ sample tests seem to encompass EVERY DETAIL in the book, but has MANY more questions than what is found in the back of the book.

Ive got pretty much ALL of the questions in the back of the book down, and a lot of them are also on the QRZ practice exams...
Im not gonna BAIL, but I do wanna make sure I can pass the first time.

Anyone have an recommendations on a radio/ antenna set up, and where I should get it (assuming that I pass). Keep in mind that Ill be using this almost exclusively on the trail (barring any unforseen enthusiasum for the HAM lifestyle...), so GOBS of money for crap Im not really gonna use is not really my preferrence.
Is there anywhere locally you can source this stuff from?
im diggin on the antennas that you folks have on the rear hatch.
Anyone using the hand held radios?

Yaesu 2800 , Diamond hatch mount , commet SBB-1 antenna .

Based upon Ali's incredible signal strength with his antenna mounted atop his roof I'll be switching from my current rear hatch lip mount to a center of roof mount. The difference is significant FWIW!
