AFAIK there are no local shops that sell HAM gear. The best prices I've found are at Ham City a lot of guys also use Ham Radio Outlet I would advise you to shop around and figure out what you want then watch E-bay and Craig's List.

I used a HT (Handy Talkie or Hand held) this week end. It works fine. If you go that route you should consider getting an external antenna and mic, they make life easier. On Fordyce I just used the HT rubber duckie antenna the fourty is open enough to get away with that. In you rig the Rubber Duckie might not work that well.

If you go with a mobile the Ft 2800 is a good choice, they go on sale all the time for less than $120.

A friend of mine who has been in HAM for years summed up his opinion on antenna mounts to me two weeks ago, "Drill a hole." If I had a roof on the 40 I'd follow his advice. would freak if I tried that with the 100.

I really liked the Larsen antenna Andy had on his 40. It is very robust, he was whacking trees and rocks with it all weekend with no visible damage.

Thanks fellas!
just went out and got some horn rim glasses and added some tape to them for some flare!
Now I just have to figure out what a good radio for me would be.
I dig around on the sales sites (hamcity etc.), and I dont even know where to begin with that...
When I do get one, Ill probably need a little instruction on how to work it, set it up etc. if anyone is available.
Ill probably have to wait for a bit as I just dropped over a 1000.00 on my front end.

Thanks for the encouragement, and the props.
It wasnt hard at all, just as you all had mentioned.

K

Congrats!! It took about a week for my name to appear on the site. I'd start checking tomorrow for your call sign.

Put a sticky on your dash, like I do. That way I can remember my call sign and the other guys call signs.

I just copied you Jack: Print it out, use clear packing tape to 'laminate' it and then a small spot of velcro to the dash. Easy to update too.

I keep saying I'm going to do that and I never remember until I need to call someone.

That's a better idea. I am going to have to copy your copy...

Also, another idea, on the note, put the channel on there as well, ask me why.

Jack

Whats the connection?

He could have a vanity call sign of KE7ITH
He might have to have a heart to heart with Chuck about it though.

It just clicked in my pathethic little brain that with the first two letters matching his name, that it looked like a name to me, kind of a nickname so to speak. Like it could be his rapper name...

See, I told you it was only funny to me(and apparently my brother from another mother; Ali)
