Nice. I can totally make this one.

Oh, and I'm gathering everything I need for a CB install. Got that Uniden Pro510XL, Bandi mount, just ordered a bunch of firestik gear (antenna, stud mount, coax). Just going to need help/advice on running power to the CB.

So, under Agenda Item 3 in new and continued business, I'd like to exercise my membership rights to once again assert my newbie status, and say "Um, hey, anyone want to help a newbie out?"

I would...
Take it all back, and get the 2M license/ gear, cuz youll be doing that anyway not too far down the road.
I WAS a "nay sayer" on the geek gear, but it BAILED me out 2 weekends ago. Im ALL OVER that system now if for nothing other than the range it has! For safety...its amazing!

Yeah, I know, but that's probably a 2009 project. I'm hoping to get this done before I leave for Colorado. Otherwise, I'm hosed.

I figured as much...
Just giving you a little $HIT in the mean time...sort of.
However, I was just trying to save you a step and some expense by suggesting it.
Those 2M are really amazing tools.

No worries. Baby steps is the way I see it. Start with the CB, then when I get the itch to do 2M, the rig should already be wired up to power a radio. Simpler install for the next one, I'm assuming. But like Pop says, "You know what assume means..."

CB comes in handy when you need to communicate with the knuckle dragging crowd.
FWIT I also carry FSR radios.

For the price of a mid range CB you could get an entry level 2M rig, the Yaesu FT2800 can be had for under $120. An antenna will cost about the same for CB or 2M. Unfortunately a CB antenna won't work for 2M and visa versa. Long term it will cost you less to jump right into 2M than to screw around with CB then swap over to Ham.

On another note if you plan to use the wiring you run for CB to power a 2M rig you had better use at least 10GA wire. Since the power requirements are pretty low for CB you can get away with 12GA . CB transmit power legal limit is 4W compared to the 50W typical of a mobile 2M rig. CB also uses AM rather than FM which makes 2M more resistant to noise.

I'm bringing all my CB toys to the meeting tonight. Think I have what I need (except for where the power is going to come in) to get it ready for this Colorado trip. Don't have an SWR meter though.

I have a CB SWR meter if you want to borrow it.
