Cruiser Down

As Will eluded to in his Deer Valley post, my cruiser is down.

I was getting a pretty loud growl on deceleration, even after having the driveshafts re-balanced. Well the drive to and from Deer Valley finished it off.

I had changed the oil on Friday before the trip and as I was lubing the dshafts, I noticed that the front pinion had some play in it (actually I had noticed when I re-installed the d-shafts after the re-balance). The t-case side is tight, the rear shaft is tight at both the t-case and rear diff are also tight. The front pinion has probably a 1-2mm movement in all directions, so the pinion bearing must have gotten damaged on one of the removal/installation cycles.

As you all know, to get the third out, I have to completely tear the front axle apart (my favorite) . So I will have to get the parts ordered, pull everything apart and haul the third down to Sean and have him do the repair.

I think the Toyota gods hate me...

Jack

dude,

That blows - sorry to hear that. Other than the oem pinion seal, what else you need from Toy? The bearings and races can be sourced locally if you can figure out the Timken p/ns.

I don't envy you one bit! On the other hand, hopefully that'll solve your vibes once and for all. As usual, I'll be with you EVERY step of the way...in spirit!

Don't what you did in your past life but we gotta work on your Toyota juju.....

I agree. I'll let you know, as you know, it's not hard work just messy and time consuming.

The only parts needed are the bearing/race, oil retaining ring thing-a-ma-bob, and pinion seal.

I am hoping that this has been the source of the vibrations also, it would be nice if it does fix it.

I don't envy me a bit either.

I don't know what I did either, but I would like it to stop.

Jack

It is the diff that I had done, but I don't blame Sean, I had pressed it on and off a few times before I took it to him, so I am sure that between one of us (most likely me) it got damaged. It just wasn't a noticable thing at first. Time/mileage finished it off.

Wanna buy a Ramcharger???? Taillights are on the way.... You could be wheeling in a week without any gear oil smell.

Of course, the 8 mpg kinda sucks....

Axle teardown is complete and parts have been ordered.

Unfortunately, I won't be able get the third down to Sean until the 18th or 19th.

I appreciate the offer, but I don't think my parts will be in by this weekend. Everything except the star washers had to be ordered. Not too many people have pinion problems I guess, which is a good sign (I hope).

If you want to send that diff down with Dan, I'll see him at Oysterfest and I'll get the diff to Sean on Monday. He can get the parts in real time from West Coast if needed.

I really appreciate the offer Andy. I should have the parts either today (Thursday) or Friday, unfortunately, I am packing up tonight and leaving first thing tomorrow morning for Great Basin NP. I won't have the time to get the diff/parts to Dan before I leave.

I will just head down next Friday and drop it off to Sean, hopefully, he can do it while I wait.

Then I have the weekend to put everything back together.

Jack

Parts are in, will be heading down on Friday morning for the fix. I also ordered some of Marlin's Heavy Duty Axle seals.

Couple of more days...

Dang...if I'd only known...Marlin was at the PMC swap meet. Alvaro picked up the same seals from him that day.

I didn't even know Marlin had them until Sunday night, so no worries, I ordered a few other items as well.

Nothing hardcore planned for runs.

I hope the seals are as good as everyone says as well. Mine are only about 5k miles old, but if these are that good, then why not? I know that with the stockers on the 80's, they can last anywhere from 60-100k, but still, better is better.

Jack
