VIN Check
I have a subscription to a CarFax competitor for the next month. If you want a VIN run send it PM and I'll run it for you. It needs to be a modern 17 digit number. The FJ40 vins don't work.
EDIT: Include an email in the PM so I can send you the PDF. __________________ aka Bushrat 1969 FJ40 Project TEROTE: Tim@DOA 3FE stroker (aka 2FE), H55F, SOA/SR, 35" MT/R, 3:1TC ... assembly in process 1985 4Runner: lifted, locked, Tim@DOA 22RE, 4.7 tc, with 33" training wheels. This brings up an issue. I have found several sites to do vin checks, but they all want the 17 numbers. Anyone know how to check the 40's number? The project I bought came out of a field in Texas and although I have a bill of sale, no title. Any advice?

* the current title or other ownership document(s) for the vehicle * your current odometer reading * proof of New Mexico residency and your New Mexico residential address * proof of insurance including policy number and insurance carrier name If you are just titling the truck you don't need insurance. You will need to present the truck to MVD for a VIN inspection since it was not titled in NM. Best thing to do is talk with them. They seem pretty easy to work with in situations like this. I had to jump through some hoops to get mine titled, and they were very helpful. For the MVD to do a VIN inspection you have to bring it to them, as in on a trailer or get it driving (that's what I'm waiting for with my HJ-45). The other way to do it is to pay to get a VIN inspector to come check your serial number and they can check that it isn't stolen.
It's kind of pricey, but possible. We had to go that route with the old dump truck (as it had been titled under the wrong serial number in 1949 and never corrected). I could probably drum up the name of the guy we used if you needed, but I think we got his name from the MVD. Thanks for the info guys. Dan, if you have the guy's number, sure send it in a PM if it is not a hassle. The body is still on the trailer as I am waiting to move some stuff in the garage. So, I am certainly not in a hurry.

Some of NM state police are certified vin inspectors and can come to your place to do the inspection. I was told $50, but still haven't got around to it. You might want to run a title history in TX if you think it was last registered there, but if it's more than 10 years since registered they probably won't find anything. If you have no title history and it's clean in NCIC, from what I've been told you have to bond for a title. This requires an appraisal (which is supposed to be market value for that model in some kind of average condition, not the body you brought home ) Your insurance company can probably do the bond, which is about $20/$1000 in appraised value, usually a $200 minimum. I think NM requires a 2 year bond, can't remember. I haven't had any luck finding a vehicle appraiser in the area. I googled some and emailed but got no response. Haven't tried any harder than that. The other option is to get frame numbers and title from another 40 and swap them.
Post up how it goes. If I ever get back on my 45, I still need to do that. __________________ David |

Thanks again - good info. I figured that many of you have done a similar thing when rebuilding rigs brought in from a field and revived. I will keep you updated.

I ran a VIN for Ash yesterday that was very interesting. It was for a 2000 Subaru Outback. It had a small "odometer discrepancy." On 6/1/2004 the mileage was recorded as 197,108. Eight days later it was ... 18,973. It was nice of the folks in Utah to mark the title with "not actual miles."

That reminds me of a Tercel I looked at a long time ago with an old girlfriend (OK, she wasn't all that old - how about previous girlfriend?!?).
Anyway, the odometer said 97,000 miles, but there was a sticker under the hood that said that the timing belt had been replaced at 150,000 miles... two years before!
