You didn't see it run? It does that. The problem is stopping and steering, though stopping will be resolved this weekend.

I'm shooting for having my new (or old 40) being roadworthy before it hits $10/gallon. That gives me about two years, right?

Recap of Today

I finish the rear brakes. It turned out to be more complicated than I had hoped. I worked on them last night and realized that the 3-way split on the rear diff wasn't going to work in the factory location. The 3-way was located right where I need to mount one of the shocks. So this morning I went back to the drawing board.

The solution was to drill and tap a 1/2" piece of steel and weld it to the top of the diff housing. I also realized that the Chevy calipers were set up for a front exit on the banjo fitting which put the line right into the axle tube. Solution was to grind in a notch so I could bring them out the side parallel with the axle instead of directly into it.

After I was all done I filled the master cylinder and bleed the calipers. The only leak I had was at the proportion valve. I don't have a 3/8" flare wrench so it wasn't tight. It is now.

On to electrical.

Headlights are roughed in. The goal was to get them figured out. Tomorrow I'll make them pretty. I need to figure out where I'm going to mount the relay, either under the dash, or on the firewall. Same goes for the taillight relay. I suspect they will go on the firewall. I did get the OEM flasher wired. I also got the horns wired, though I found out one of my horns doesn't work. I have a pair of FJ62 horns someplace but I couldn't put my hands on them.

Tomorrow will be taillights and turn signals ... and making things pretty.

I can't believe it took all day to get to one point. There were too many steps involved and the dominoes just kept falling. First pic is the finished product ... relays for the headlights and the parking/tail lights. Second pic is what's left under the dash. Considering what it looked like earlier in the day I'm quite pleased. I know the headlights work. I have no idea if the turn/haz/tails work.

I have a pair of 80 horns if you cannot find the FJ62 horns. FIAAM sells the "freeway blaster" horns at places like Pep Boys. They are loud and have more of a "truck" sound than the stock 80 horns. I swapped mine a few years ago.

Nice progress Jon!

Update. I just can't seem to stay away now that I'm motivated again. Parking/tail lights work. I'm a little concerned about the haz/turn signals. I couldn't get the flasher to work and I'm hoping it's because I didn't have any lights attached.

That would be a reason...

Overall though, this is big news. I thought the Phoenix landing on Mars was big...

Congratulations!

More JOY!

Except for a few very loose ends like the license plate light, and the backup light, the lights are DONE.

Figuring out the turn signals/hazards was a challenge, but in the end was easy to solve. The fuse block I used had separate wires for the turns and the hazards, each with it's own fuse. It took me a long stare at the wiring diagrams to figure out that the wires go from the fuse through the flasher then out. That was the problem. I was trying to double flash the lights and the flasher just buzzed. A simple jumper across the flasher terminals on the fuse block solved the problem. As expected the turn signals are real fast due to the LEDs in the rear end. I found a LED flasher online, snagged the part number, and will see if I can't find it local and save the shipping.

Two pics. One of the LED brake/parking lights for the rear end. Second of the lights on the apron, bib, and fender.

looking good!

What are you using to document the electricals? Is that one of the CAD flavors, or a dedicated wiring schematic program? I've still got lots of notes in a box from the faux-lux conversion, and I've been meaning to do it nicely someday.

X2! I think a complete manifold-tailpipe setup runs around $400 at Jim's. Keep them away from your oil filter , but they really do fantastic work.

Sandia Muffler (also on Central) does a good job too, but as I recall header to tailpipe was only about $200.

My guy is Mike at MBS in Rio Rancho (just east of the Honda dealer on 528 as you head up the hill into Rio Rancho).

Yep, and the same folks are favoring the same shops as before. Sounds like we are lucky to have several quality options for exhaust systems.

So, I'm thinking Flowmaster 50. Any opinions?

It should be noted that Matt holds you (Jon) responsible for his obsession with building a 2FE though his is a bit different from yours.

It should also be noted that you got your engine running first.

It should also be noted that he will have his truck on the trail soon.

Where is your competitive spirit?
