That old bracket worked better than I would have thought.

The hump in the middle was actually good. You might be able to see the rivet it arched over in the pic.

I figured when I fire up the engine it would be nice to have a cooling system. So last week I bought radiator hoses for Da'40. The upper hose from a FJ40 wouldn't work with the 3FE thermostat cover. I had that hose from previous carb'd dreams. So I bought a 3FE hose, and had to trim it down to make it fit. The lower hoses have been more problematic.
I bought hoses from a 1978, which was the 2F flavor in the truck when I bought it. Da'40 is a 1969 and I personally find it hard to believe things changed much getting coolent from the bottom of the radiator to the water pump. But, turns out they did. The 1978 hoses don't work. Seems in 1977 models the radiator side hose changed. So now the question is will the e-1976 hose work? I don't think other dealers would be as helpful with solving this. This is why we are lucky to have Dan in our backyard.

Mounted Fuel Filter
Mounted the fuel filter today on the charcoal canister bracket. I had to loosen the fuel filter bracket, reverse and rotate the filter, so the ends pointed the right way.

Minimal progress today. Worked on the fuel line from the filter to the tank. Also did a few little things.
The major task for the day was taking apart the 4 doors I have. I had two sets. One from 1969, and the other from ?. The ? doors were rough with one broken wing and one broken window (different doors), but all the fasteners came out. The 1969 doors were remarkably in good shape, except I broke off a bunch of screws on the window channel.

Darn, you learn something new every day. I had no idea... none what-so-ever, that you needed working windows before you can get the engine running.

Just tell him the ECM requires power off your power window circuit for the engine to run. His fancy LC has power windows, and I'm sure he can't imagine wheeling in a vehicle without 'em...

There's nothing quite like wheeling with your buddys in the most capable vehicle ever offered to the general public, pressing the button to open up the sunroof, and listening to the sounds of a Glen Miller CD over the 9 perfectly matched stereo speakers.
Bliss.
Why would Jon put power windows in a 40 with no top?

Got Steering?
After running around town this morning, the project this afternoon became the steering column. I decided to "Yankee engineer" this so I can work on the ignition wiring. Column is (sort of) mounted. That tangle of wires is the project for tomorrow.
The other little project was to stop by Midas and have them expand the Ox fittings so I could tack them on the pipes. I also talked to them about the crazy idea of dragging Da'40 in and having them do the exhaust before the rest is done. It would require getting it on a trailer and pushing it around when we get there. He didn't seem to have a problem with that.
Right now, I'm hoping to have the wiring done by Saturday next week. This means there might be fire in the six holes on Sunday.

Believe it or not, that's what I had to tease the EFI harness from. That's what was left. Now I need to tease it some more ... battery, ignition, starter, lights, wipers, horn, emer. flashers, turn signals ... off the top of my head. All the junk that plugs into the column.

I think you should leave the wiring just like that. I think it would give any would-be thieves a headache to even attempt to hotwire

So, I'm closer.
In addition to getting the ignition switch on the column hooked up to the battery, I also hooked up the fuse block to the battery, and the ECU/EFI to the fuse block. The wiring is a little rough, but some loom and cold shrink tape will fix that. The check engine light now comes on when I turn the key, and the gauges respond. Just about everything needed to provide spark is ready to go. It has air, it has spark, now it needs fuel ... and some gents in NOMEX suits .

Here is the plan. I need to source one fuel line, and I'm working on that. Once I get the line I can hook up the motor to a fuel pump and gasoline. My plan is to put fire to the holes this weekend, probably Saturday. It will depend on when I source the fuel line.
Who is up to watch? Trouble-shooting skills desirable, but not required. Pizza and Pacifico to follow.

Dang, Greg, Ryan, and I think Mike can't make it. Let me think about this. Would Tuesday after work be ok? It would certainly give me a chance to make sure all the clamps are tight, and double check everything.

You know how bad I want to be there Jon but I am not available. What's a few extra weeks when you've been dinkin' with that thing for 4 years?
Besides, the only help I would be is to eat your pizza and drink your beer. However, I have formal training with fire extinguishers by the Albuquerque Fire Department.

If your talking about Tues, July 3, then I'm in. I won't be bringing much though in the diagnostic department.
I've been wanting to be there to see it fire. I have faith.

If you're truly ready then don't wait for spectators (unless you really want to!). I've fired up two major projects (and many smaller ones) without a cheering section - doesn't diminish the ultimate result any.

Sure Glad I Checked
After work I went by NAPA to get some EFI fuel line to run between the pump and the filter (expensive stuff that was!). When I came home I pulled out the boneyard pump (not OEM, BTW) and hooked it up, tapped the wires to the battery, and ... nothing. Schit. So I pulled out my OEM boneyard pump, hooked it up, and ... bizzzzzzz. So, pending a double check on clamps, filling fluids, getting the hose for the filter, and a few other million little things, it's ready to fire. Of course coolent is optional since I won't be running her long without a muffler. I also need the bi-pass hoses on the pump.

Mike,
Considering the, er, eh, encouragement you have given me, I too am disappointed you won't be there. I'll save you a beer.
