Onward.
Four days off and I'm gonna try this paint thing. All of the body parts except the tub and the windshield frame have been sand blasted and primered.

isn't that where your 40 was parked?
does this mean the 40 is on the street?
at least when someone steals something out of it you won't have to deal with broken glass

I thought that was just a bunch of junk storage shelves until I saw the seats, steering wheel and a little bit of the tub.

Seats came from a boneyard 1991 Celica ST. I like them, though they need covers.

When I starting thinking about the DIY paint job I did a bit of lurking at the Paint and Body Forum here at Mud. There were two ways to put down the Ace Hardware Rust Stop Enamel. Quite a few people used rollers. A small few sprayed.
I started out today with the the rollers ... and it sucked. Geez, can it be any harder? So I pulled out the sprayer Dan loaned me. I've never done this before so I practiced on the back side of the parts. The side that will face into the engine compartment, not the public outside, where if I mess up it doesn't matter. In general, I'm quite pleased. Ya, I need to go slower. I'll do that on the outside where it counts.
I also went back to Chase Hardware and had a quart mixed up from the second scan. It is just a tad darker than the first round. Personally, I like both. Very Dune Beige looking.

I'm glad tonight's meeting is at Steve and Wendy's. I'm curious how my paint shade compares to a real Dune Beige.

Maybe this Sunday I'll post up pics.
So far I've painted the hood, bib, aprons, tailgates, kick vents. I need to get my mix down better. First coat was too orange peel, second coat too runny. I used those little mixing cups, and the ratios marked are way off. I now have it scientifically figured out to the milliliter so we will see how it goes this weekend, and I'll adjust accordingly now that I have the necessary precision.
BTW, thanks for the loaner spray. Rolling this stuff sucked. Spraying is the only way to go. Problem is, now I want one.

Dearest Mikey,
In light of your recent suggestion that I had gone goofy (goofy, daffy, it's one of those Disney 'toons) I have decided to make a few domestic changes. After I spent the morning sucking down more paint fumes, which I guarantee made me a bit loopy (loopy, dopey, dizzy ... wasn't one a dwarf?), I asked my bonnet to move out, or at least into another room at the other end of the house. I also evicted the rest of Da'40's bits and pieces that were living the the master bedroom. I hope this encourages you to reconsider your plans for an intervention in September.

I'll have to discuss it with the other guys. The intervention was their idea. Just so I understand, you've consolidated all your junk into 1 bedroom, plus the storage room in the back yard, and the garage. Correct?

Oh no. I still have junk in the back yard and a few things in the garage. I just consolidated what I had in the house.

I will run this by the group but my first reaction is that the hounds will be coming with vigor if those bins are not emptied and the body parts bolted onto DA 40 by Sept 30th.
And for the record.... you're not fooling anyone by shuffling your bucket of bolts from one bedroom to another. That might convince Dan and Stevie cause they're old and Shawn after he had his brains knocked out of his eye socket, but those of us with a keen memory will not be tricked that easily.
Nice try though.
... and it is "daffy."

Well, I haven't shuffled the buckets of bolts around, but the cats sure have had fun. I think it's is safe to say that there isn't a piece of furniture, or an appliance, without some bits under it.
And, "for the record," it's da'ffy.

I really like that color you selected. How many coats are you applying?

I'll keep applying until I get it right. I'm on about three coats right now, but there has also been a bit of sanding in between each. I'm going to give her one more sanding, they try and polish it out. We will see where I'm at after the polishing. I keep getting something that looks like extreme orange peel. Some guys over in the paint and body section thought it was a chemical reaction, but I've been consistant with the thinner, so I wasn't convinced.
I think the issue is with the hardener, but, I think I figured out the problem this weekend. I've been using mineral spirits to thin the paint and hardener. I noticed this weekend that the hardener was not mixing with the mineral spirits and was floating at the bottom of the mix. To try and solve this I bought a can of lacquer thinner and did a test mix with the hardener. It appeared that the hardener mixed completely. I then added some paint and rolled it out. So far so good. Next time I will try and spray the mix and see what happens.
I too like the color.

Painted this morning, as usual. This afternoon I tackled the CB install into the Tuffy center console. More involved than it should have been, but I think this works, except for having to remove the mic when I put it to sleep.
I need to paint the spacers black, and get 5mm screws to hold it in place. Minor compared to trying to get the spacers sized just right.

Looks like a nice clean install, and it should be nice and secure, even with no top.
Can't wait to see it on the trail!
