Xmas Tree Run - the specifics

Let's go ahead and pencil some specifics down so folks can plan. I propose:

ABQ contingent meet at north portal (gas station SE corner of NM 550/528) at 9:00am. Northern contingent meet at Walatowa at Jemez Pueblo around 10:00am where we'll all buy permits.

Marc, feel free to call the FS on Friday regarding road status - we'll groundtruth in the field and figure out a route there. Let's get trees first, then those folks that need to peel off for home can do so.

Our cover story in case anyone asks is that we're verifying all the forest road numbers in Toyota's new GPS navigation system, though an owner-outreach program funded by same.

Looking at the map there is a Walatowa Bvd and Ave. Neither intersects hwy 4, I'm not sure exactly where the meeting place is!
Please verify that I can buy a permit the meeting place.

Thanks,

Steve Messinger

You can purchase the tree permit at the Walatowa Visitor Center on the REZ. You can't miss the place, it's right next to the gas station and across the street from the vending booths. Look for a bunch of Toyotas.

So I assume this is on the northwest side of albuquerque... maybe in rio rancho or bernalillo?

I will need to get a hold of a map to find where that is.

Steve,

Jemez Pueblo is located South of the village of Jemez Springs on Hwy 4. The Walatowa visitor's center will be a large 1 story building on the West side of Hwy 4 (on your right as you approach from the North.) As Jon says, you can't miss the place as it gets very congested in the area. There is a convenience store in the gas station which is also on the West side of Hwy 4 adjacent to the Walatowa Visitor's Center.

Michael,

The meeting place for the Albuquerque group is at the gas station that is on the SE corner of Hwy 528 and Hwy 550. It is next to a Wendy's and has changed brands a few times. I think its a Conoco now but don't count on that.

From Albuquerque, take I25 North to the Hwy 550 exit in Bernalillo. Go West on 550 through the town of Bernalillo, across the Rio Grande, past the Santa Ana Star casino and get in the left turn lane so you can go South on 528 about .1 mile to the meeting location. There is a light at the intersection of 550 & 528. The gas station & convenience store is on the East side of 528 (your left.)

I called Walatowa and the Cuba District HQ. Both districts got ~6" of snow on Wed/Thurs. They claim all the roads are still open. 376 is closed at the tunnels (south end) due to a movie being filmed. It is open at the north end where it intersects 126. I didn't get an impression from either person I talked to that the recent snow did much in terms of restricting access. So I'll see some of you at the north portal tomorrow at 9 and the rest at Walatowa Visitor Center at 10.

Marc

It's still undecided whether we will go to 280 or 376. Espanola/SF people that don't want to go all the way down to the Walatowa visitors center should plan to meet at the "Y" where 126 and 4 meet at La Cueva at 10:45. If we go to 280 or 289, you won't have to backtrack much but you also won't miss us if we go to the west instead. I don't feel like I have the authority to make the decision of where to go. Greg has a good point that we really won't know the conditions until we get there. We will have to pass the NM4 and NM126 junction regardless of the route that is eventually decided upon so just plan to meet there.

i have a dead battery on the 40, so the extra time will allow me to charge it. don't wait for me at N portal. i may just go straight for Walatowa.
