Tires
If you need tires in the Greensboro area, you can NOT beat Taylor's Discount Tires (336-375-8883). I've bought 5 sets of tires from them (4 sets of Swampers and a set of Bridgestones for my Honda) and they have always beaten any price I can get anywhere else by a wide margin. Even tirerack.com can't touch 'em. Ask for Scott and tell him Allen Dickenson sent ya. Scott has always done right by me. Even if it is a little bit of a drive from Durham to get tires, I will never buy a set of tires from anywhere else as long as I live in this area.

Real impressed by powdercoating prices, especially in their standard black (60% gloss)

Is it "Charlie's Transmission" on Avondale? Or is it "Capital Transmissions & Auto Repair"? That one seems to be in the location you're talking about. If not, do you know the actual name of the shop?
EDIT: I found the number and just called and they only do automatic transmissions. He gave me the name of a guy to try, but I'm not sure. I might just go w/ Marlin unless someone has had experience w/ any of the local shops. That's an expensive route to take, but at least I'd know what I was getting.

No personal experience here, but I have also heard good things about this guy. A rover buddy informed me that he was had good results from Dale.

Walt's Radiator and Muffler Shop in Lexington,NC
About a month ago the cats went bad on my 80, and if you have ever priced them you know how expensive they are. A co worker put me onto a muffler shop in Lexington and they replaced both converters for $200 and I was out of there in less than 45 minutes. That was several hundred dollars cheaper than anywhere else by far. After the cat replacement some debris out of the converters had shaken back into the muffler and was producing a very irritating rattle at idle, so I called several muffler shops around greensboro and was floored at how high the prices were for a replacement muffler, and at every shop it had to be ordered. So I drove back to Lexington to the shop that did the cats and less than 30 minutes later I was back on the road with a brand new muffler for
50 dollars........yes 50 dollars, thats parts AND labor total. I am very pleased with everything and would recommend them to anyone.

I wanted someone to go over my rig top to bottom. I chose Merriam Automotive in Duluth, Ga- Peter is the owner and comes highly recommended. I will probably use Mostly's after that.....or do it myself with FSM I just ordered. My 60 is finally getting dropped off tomorrow after a long wait... first thing is underbody chassis cleaning- I did my Tacoma today for practice- very dirty job, but so satisfying.

I need a good mechanic in the vicinity of Mebane (Alamance County). Driving an fj80 with an inspection sticker that expired last January. Already replaced O2 sensor, VSV and ECR. Getting a PO401 code. Does the "PO" stand for Pxxsed-off?

the fj80 i bought from ashville had most of the work done at mostly toyota according to the PO. while i don't know the mechanics side of the story the PO said he just had them do a brake job on it cause the rear brake was smoking and he said they just put new pads on and it was fine. the rear piston was pitted and the brake fliud was so bad the bleeder was fused soild. not my idea of a quality shop, but like i said the PO may have told the mechanic not to fix it. knowing nothing else about the shop i would say keep this in mind.

Is Tar heel 4wd the only good 4wd shop near charlotte. I am now determined to track down and squash this annoying death wobble I get from 30-40 mph and would like someone wiser than I to look at it.

Thank you Greg! I'm all about the HAMOM, I don't know a lot about LC's mechanically, but I am a quick learner. Look forward to helping out and learning in future HAMOMs.

I'm not even sure if this is the right place to post this but I am looking for a good general Toyota mechanic in Winston Salem. I have owned a 95 FJZ80 that I have decided to keep and restore and although I have maintained it with proper oil changes etc.. I'd like to have it looked at by someone who knows Toyotas.
My past mechanic was good at taking care of maintenance but was wondering if any of you Triad guys knew of someone you could recommend that is trustworthy and priced well.
I know I need the brakes checked and after having my oil changed yesterday, they told me that I had a small oil leak. I thought this was a good time to have it in to be looked over. It is probably in line for an overall tune up too.
Thanks in advance,
-Murph
