80 Series Front Windshield

After taking a lug nut to the front window and finding out it cannot be fixed and water stating to leak through I figure it's time to get it replaced.

I checked with a few places here in Burlington and wasn't sold on their service/price/attitude. One dude told me all the windshields and seals were the same...I seriously doubt that they are .

I also checked with Cox Toyota and a new OEM windshield is 630ish wholesale which is major $$$.

Anyone have a place in the RDU/GSO/WS area that they would recommend?

Also what aftermarket brands for the windshield have people had good luck with (I plan on purchasing a new OEM seal which isn't that pricey)?

Thanks in advance!
-Jon

I have seen in threads that a lot of people also want the company to use a sealant/glue on the seal. I'm not sure if it's becuase they're using aftermarket seals, or what. But I'm sure you might have seen some threads on it.

Let me know how it goes, becuase I need to change mine. PO said it leaks during rain, but no real major cracks/stars. I did notice my driver side floorboard was wet after the last couple days of rain...

OK without checking my facts the way i understand it is that you must use glue on BOTH the surfaces from gasket to vehicle and glass to gasket. Lots of places want to skip this step saying its not necessary but its in the FSM and per toyotas specs.

Also i believe it was PPG that made a run of windsheild replacements for the 80 series that were cut just a fraction too small.

Ive used Matkins in the past but not for the cruiser. There are several around but the one here in GSO is on Norwalk off Wendover.

Wet floorboards is likely the sunroof drains. Clean the slits in the rockers where they drain from the body, that fixed Emma's on the D.S., but the P.S. still gets wet some only during DOWNPOURS. I suspect there's a plastic part that in the sunroof pan that is warped per some threads I have seen, so that will be the next steps for us to get rid of in-cab moisture.

Sorry for the hijack Jon.

I have a PPG windshield in my 80 with no issues. It was replaced before I bought it.

We replaced the windshield in the 100 with a PPG and it is also fine. I believe we used Raleigh Glass who I think also repairs windshields for Fred Anderson. The tech was very helpful with diagnosing a previous bad install which caused wind noise and water leaks. I can check when I get home if we have the particular tech's name for you.

The previous windshield in the 100 was not a PPG and was not properly installed (maybe only glued and no gasket?). I think it was done by Glass Masters. I can try and confirm later today.

I would highly recommend buying the necessary seals from Fred Anderson, but the PPG windshield should be OK.

Chad Cox - 336-416-0911 is my brother in law and has been installing glass for 12-15 years or more? He owns "A Touch of Glass" and he will guarantee your window won't leak!! (He uses MORE sealant than alot of other guys / it costs him more but worth it in the end)

I am 90% sure he put one in my 80 series before I traded it to a guy in TN. He has done all my glasswork over the last 10 years, never a leak in any of em.

Guarantee he will do you right on the price too

FOREIGN CARS ITALIA won't let anyone else touch their glass work and he does everything for Rice Toyota Auto body shop too... but going direct to Chad will save you BIG $

Unfortunately, I looked and couldn't find the receipt for the 100's windshield. I'll keep looking. From the checkbook the cost of the windshield and install was about $240. I think the gasket from Toyota was about $75.

PPG with the OEM seal. I had one of the PPG Prostar dealers do the work, so far, so good. The OEM gasket is way better than what the aftermarket installers use fo sho.

As long as you make sure they use the glue on both sides like every body else said, you'll be fine. You might get lucky, but if they don't, it most likely will leak. The installers will act like it is a big pain in the ass and won't want to do it, and sometimes won't even if you ask them to.

Jon, $175.00 installed using ppg glass and you can add $32.75 if you need a replacement toyota oem gasket.

update, I forgot to mention this:
there is a bronze tint and a blue/green tint that was used from the factory based on the color of your interior. The bronze is more expensive ($20.00) so there might be bump in the price, but i thought he quoted me bronze.
