[QUOTE]Maybe "they'll" forget about it and find a new place, then when it "opens", "they'll" never know.... [QUOTE] And maybe monkeys will fly out of my pooper.
Guerillia warfare baby.
I say we find some contractors who like to wheel and head out there with a bunch of bachoes and bull dozers and open the trail back up. Then we chain a rusted out 4x4 to a few dozen trees just like the hippies do. It usually buys them a few hours days from keeping the loggers out. Then they get the sympathy of millions of other hippies/congressmen who don't even know what type of tree they are chained to. It should at least buy us a few days of good wheeling time. If the rangers give us any crap we just take his radio and chain him up as well. Drug him and make him spew our propoganda and then throw it out on all the cable and alphabet networks. Make it seem like he chained himself up.
Worst that could happen is we get labled as ECO TERRORISTS, but since Obama seems it is more necessary to charge our CIA Agents for torture and let those past terrorists run free on our dime thru the Northern plains we should be fine
Lets go wheeling

I'm down with that Jason.
As far as still trying to keep it secret. It doesn't matter anymore, they are paving things over and making parking lots it isn't going to reopen without a huge fight, and the only way to do that is have more people know about it. Keeping it secret is got it like it is. The FS was able to close it on the hush hush because not that many people knew about it and no one wanted to talk to the FS about it and try to do trail maint on it. The plans for closing it were on the books over two years ago but no one knew about it because the few people who knew about the spot and kept it secret didn't talk to the FS. According to the documents anyone opposed to the closing had time to voice their opinion in the begining of 2008. I bet that was a pretty empty room.
Just my 2 cents the more people that know about things the more there are to fight and keep it open.

I think this is really a double edged sword because the more people know the more Public it becomes and the more traffic it sees which causes those "erosion, and whatever" other issues they try and fight against. But I do agree that more people involved makes more sense.

I agree 100% with what you said Greg. It is a slippery path we walk for our hobby and our love of the outdoors (that isn't seen as love by others)
Back in Cali they have signs at the beggining of every trail head telling people to keep on trails and pick up trash the power is yours, that kind of stuff. All trails are made public and if one gets threatened everybody jumps on it. I can't remember one trail closing down in recent years either and we had about 15 times the tree huggers back there than we do here.
I'm sorry for cramming up a thread about harlan with chat and if you want to move all this into the thread we already had going thats cool.
I've just been getting more and more pissed off about the whole closure thing recently. I'm going to have some

I am going to make it official. I am in for the trip to Harlan.... Looking forward to it. Arkansas was just too far away for this year.

Alright, list has been updated to include Josh. So I'm assuming that the list is pretty up to date, since no one else has posted any interest... We'll have 8 rigs, I'll make 10 "info packets" for everyone, although we'll be going up with Stan, who has been there before and can act as a guide for us.
Food:
Thursday night: Eat in town?
Friday night: I'm thinking everyone can bring the components of a good chili recipe for one night.
Saturday night: Fall themed dinner
Other info to come

I have a buddy from Greensboro that is coming along for the ride. He will be driving up maybe late Thursday, but won't have a trail rig, so I'm looking for some seat time for him with me and some of you guys with open seat(s).

Maybe I should read the first post again. Correct me if I got details wrong.
everyone is going to roll into town on thursday around what time? and we are setting up camp etc. we wheel Friday and saturday and head home sunday?
Do I need to make any reservations for any campsites or anything right now? I am going to Knoxville Thursday and picking up my passenger and we were just going to hang there and then come up friday morning but if everyone is rolling in Thursday we may come then as well....

Departure time has not been discussed yet. I originally thought I might leave Raleigh on Wed night, stay halfway in Boone, then drive the other 3 hours on Thursday morning. But, if the collective is leaving on Thursday morning and driving the 7 hours, then I may just join the group becuase there is no point in getting there before the rest.
If everyone rolls in mid afternoon Thursday, then yeah, set up camp get/make some grub and get a good night sleep for the wheeling on Friday and Saturday. Leave on Sunday at a good time. Campsites have been reserved, guy said there is plenty of room for us and booked us 4 sites (quoted originally about 20 people)
I think most people going will want 90% wheeling, with some breaks in between, but I'll find some side ventures just in case of weather, reduced interest, female types, etc.

Brian,
Thanks for all of your hard work on this trip. I know coordinating all of this while still having a professional and personal life is a lot.
Its gonna be a great trip!

The wife and I are planning to leave fairly early Thursday morning but not super early.
I'd like to get there, have time to tool around, and setup camp in daylight...

Shall the Triangle crowd leave at around 9? We'll meet up with the Triads at 10ish? Josh will already be in KY, and Logan can meet up with us at the same time? John/J do you know of a good meet up spot in your area? I was thinking taking 40 to 421. Stop in Boone for lunch around 12ish and head out?

Sandy Ridge Rd. Exit 208 has the farmers market which will have a large parking lot available; also two gas stations at that exit.

Hi all, I am Stan, the guy Brian has mentioned that has been to Harlan and will be hanging out with your group. My wife Heather and I hope to be able to get up to Harlan early Friday morning if Heather can get off work on Friday. She thinks it should be a go but at the latest we will arrive late Fri evening.
My buddy James may well also attend and I also know of another guy from FL that may be able to make it. He will be getting some major surgery at Bud Built on the 6th and 7th and will be trailering his FJ with a 35' land yacht. He will most likely be in the lower parking area as getting that barge up to any other camp sites would be tough.
We generally camp at camp site #3 when we go to Harlan. It is about 1/8 mile up from the main camping area and a bit more secluded from the trail than other camp sites. There are generally quite a few ATV groups doing night runs and the noise in the main parking/camp site can be enough to wake you. Brian, shoot me a PM if you want to talk about this.

Glad you and Heather can make it Stan. Also be good to see James.
I've been "working" Stan to get involved with us for a while and hope this will inspire him to drop the major coin to join ONSC...

I'm a tentative on this one. I'm planning on going, and I will leave pretty early if I do. I hate to be so wishy washy on everything, but that's just the nature of my situation at the moment.
For those that have been before, how secure is the camp while we are gone? I'm assuming we can have fires, beer, coolers, and whatnot without being fined or things disappearing?
Compared to Uhwarrie/Tellico, how do these trails compare? I'm not really set up for hard wheeling anymore, so I'll need to take things into consideration like trees and large boulders that want to rip the hard top off.

I have camped there several times and theft was never an issue. Camp fires are fine.
THere are trails for every taste as well.
I am not so worried about snakes, but there are bears in the area.

I've only been there for a day and a half so I'll yield to Stan. But, from what I saw when I was there, you'll be fine unless you want to get yourself into trouble. It seemed like there were many options on trails and they criss-crossed so if someone wanted to skip a section, they could meet up around the next section.
I'd hate to have you miss it, I feel that given that Tellico is unavailable right now, from what I've seen of Harlan, it has as much to offer as Tellico and has the strong support of the local community...

Jerry is correct. Many of the trails with more extreme sections have a bypass around the really hard spots. One of the toughest trails "canopener" is really just a section off of a moderate trail. The cool thing here is that there is plenty of parking to stop and watch the rock buggies attempt it. Same applies to Lions Den and Mason Jar. You can drive right up to them on a moderate trail, whether you chose the extreme section is up to you.

Stan, based on your comment about campsites and the request for#3, I had already 4 sites reserved for us with electric hook ups. He didn't give me site numbers though... Should I get in touch with the owner and request it, or is #3 away from the bathrooms/showers for the women folk?
