New guy

Howdy fellas, I am the new guy. Some of you have spoken to me on the main mud site, but I have not ventured to the local level until now. I have a 1996 white Cruiser. Some of you will recognize it as previously belonging to George Bates, whose screen name I do not remember. Currently it is stock, and I am planning to keep it that way for now. Biggest undertaking is the rear deflector and the OE roof rack. All of it has slight surface rust that I am trying to kill.

As my profile states, I am in Raleigh, and would like to meet some of the local cruiser heads.

Cheers,

Jeremy

Howdy Jeremy,

You should try to make it to one of the upcoming events (Triad meeting, Brown Mt trip, etc.) to meet some of the guys. We have a good group of 80s and other Toys in the Triangle which will be a big help with learning about your truck. Beside the rack and deflector, have you baselined the fluids or need to do any bigger maintenance items?

Thanks for the warm welcomes. Never fails, mud and cruiser groups are always great people. Probably part of the reason I keep buying cruisers.

This is my fifth (technically I'll claim fourth). I am the guy in Raleigh that owned a 1997 LX for about a week before someone hit it, and totaled it. A few ONS guys counseled me to keep the truck, but that was not in the cards. I have owned 2 FJ40's, 1 FJ60, and 2 FZJ80's. My first 40 is by far my favorite.

I have done nothing beyond drive her home, and start on the rust. George took very good care of the truck. Oil changed recently, front axles repacked in the last 20k miles, timing chain done at 180,000, new brakes to name some stuff he did. I have noticed some spots in the garage from rear oil pan, or rear seal. Have not crawled under the truck, yet.

If anyone is working on their 80, I will lend a hand. It has to be good exposure and experience for working on mine.

Ah, so you were looking at George's white 80, I was looking at the red one, but it didn't have a little switch on the left hand side of the wheel....

Welcome Jeremy. Hope to see you on the trails with the group. There are a couple of guys with basically stock 80's that do very well.
