Pick up National Geographic Map #779 or 780 for the Pisgah National Forest. It has all of the paved, non-paved roads, topo, trails, etc. They have em at just about any large bookstore, REI Great Outdoor Provision Co, etc. Its about $10.00 or so. If someone in GSO wants to use mine, they are more than welcome to it.
As an option, you can drive up Wilson Creek Gorge(dirt road called Brown Mountain Beach Road). Beautiful scenery, some whitewater kayak action if the water is up. Tons of forest roads up there branching off in different directions. Lots of hiking trails if you want to get out and walk around. It eventually connects to Blowing Rock via Globe Rd (again, all dirt, several large climbs, waterfalls, and stuff). Hwy 90 runs through there as well, connecting in the town of Mortimer, and goes dirt for many miles.
Expect lines at Linville Caverns if the temps are hot...we went last summer and waited over an hour.
For the more adventurous folks, several zipline companies have opened up around Boone/Banner Elk/Seven Devils.

Ah, globe road. I heard they shut alot of that down in the last few years. Wheeled it one time when I was at ASU, it's a neat little area, with some nice climbs.

You arriving Friday or Saturday. I ask becuase I might have to reserve one more campsite for Friday night, and to make sure we're all in the same section, I might have to jump on it...

We are planning to get there early Saturday, like 8-9ish.
For the pot luck - sign us up for fresh ears of corn and string beans.

Looks like it might be a Jetta trip. Title is comming for the FJ62 a week late and only could scrounge up one 4-wheeler so no need for the truck.
Count us in Saturday...we are leaving here around 8 which it puts us there just after 12.
Also I know we can have our dogs at the campground but is it possible to bring our Chi's on the trails with us? We really can't leave them anywhere as they can't really stand up for themselves at 9lbs combined.

Not a member of ONSC yet but hope to work things out so I can make it up on Saturday (assuming a stock 100 with 285 at's will be ok), being that I live just 40 mins away and went to ASU I got a few comments about the area...
The Globe, very hit and miss, alot of side trails have been shut down over the past few years, I would want to talk to someone who has been in the area in the last 6 months...
Did someone say breakfast? I recommend "The Mountain House," just inside the Boone city limits on the righthand side of 321 (across from Kmart), near Makoto's (umm, lunch) very close to Tweetsie.
In blowing rock is Sledgehammer Charlie's Sledgehammer Charlies's Restaurant :: Blowing Rock, North Carolina right on 321, good but a bit different food... Insane pizza is in downtown blowing rock, can't remember the side street name but it's The Mellow Mushroom Mellow Mushroom, near the Theater. Lot's of upscale food and bars too if thats your thing...
The zip line company mentioned is http://www.screamtimezipline.com/directions.html
Sugar ski mountain in Banner Elk is open for hiking, mountain biking, chair lift rides http://www.skisugar.com/conditions/
also, Alpine Ski center was having a big sale if ya need some new ski/snow gear, not sure if it's still going on or not...
Same with Mast general store in downtown Boone and in Vally Crucis, deals on winter wear...
If you want to hike a bit and check out something different a really cool place that's off the beaten path is the "Hebron Rock Colony" Go out 221 from downtown blowing rock (be sure to hit up Kilwin's for some ice cream and killer waffle cones) hang a right on Shull's Mill Road (go under/around Park Way) then turn left on Turnpike Road, you'll go about a mile and there's a real sharp left hand turn, the trail head is in the curve, they'll be cars there. Park and hike approx 1/2 mile to creek, then make your way up the left side of the creek to the rocks, then go as far as you like. You could get wet, but wear shoes with tread, here's some pics I took a few weeks back up there. My wife and kids, 6 & 10, and the 2 year old on my back got about 1/2 way up the rocks, something different to see and nice to hang out/enjoy the water. Of course if you really want to "hike" there are alot better places...
Have Fun!
Also, we camped at Price's Park last weekend, temps got down to 50 + wind, throw in some warm stuff plus rain gear...

I don't think it will be a problem any place with the dogs as long as they are on a leash.

This rock colony area is really cool, we used to go up there quite a bit when I was at ASU. Kindof neat once you reach the top how flat and level it becomes. There's also a nice rock ledge on the left side of the hiking trail about half way up that we did some bouldering on. Some, actually most of the rocks there are the size of a VW bug. Really cool area to spend a couple hours at, also at Price Lake you can, if in season, rent kayak, and canoes to paddle the lake.

Someone suggest something for me to bring for the pot luck. I'll end up bringing cups if I leave it to the last second.

if someone can make a list of "needs" then we can sign of on it. this will make sure we have the core items and minimize duplication.

Hey Brian - did you happen to get another spot for Friday night?
I messed up and thought the trip was this weekend (we have another wedding to go to)
I might be able to convince the to make it out there.
it'd just be us + the dog, getting there late on Friday.
Don't make any plans around us - I'll let you know for sure late tonight/tomorrow (it'll depend on how convincing Stacy will be ha!).
Hey Greg - have you ever used Google Docs - it's awesome for multiple people editing and doesn't require tons of attachments/emails. You have to have a google acct (don't have to have gmail) - but it's free...you just share who has access and if they are read-only or editable. It's sweet.

I'll have to look at the map of the campground and see what's open. There were plenty of spots, and I picked an area with the most open. There's a chance that those extra spots may be taken. I'll take a look and see what's open. I was waiting on Ramon to let me know, that may make 2 extra spots for friday night... I want as many people to go as possible.

Sounds like a good task for Joe to research for the ONSC site. Maybe it's simply adding a link? Anything to add traffic...

Ramon and Jared: I was not able to reserve campgrounds for you guys, the website will only allow me to reserve 4 spots under my name. You'll have to go to recreation.gov, create an account if you haven't already go to Linville Falls campground, and choose spot B64 or B66. I've reserved B57,58,61,and 62... let me know if you have any problems... Only one of you will have to do it becuase it's up to 6 people and 2 vehicles...
