This little piggies headed to the barn

Alright so I caved in and bought an FJ55, as some of you know my first car was a 1972 FJ55 that I had purchased when I was 14 to use to pull my landscaping trailer around the neighborhood before getting my license, well I thought here's an opportunity to start on another one and take my time, though at this point I am not sure what to do with it.

The history:
Truck came from a gentleman in Archdale, and was taken as a act of horse trading for a Fiero R7. I purchased it from the gentleman who traded the Fiero R7 for it. Thats all I know at this point.

The truck:
1979 FJ55 with factory power steering, 2f smogged like none other, 4 speed tranny, front disc brakes, and for the first time in a long time everything works. I have never come across a truck that had all functional lights working. I have done a little research and apparently the FJ55's with factory power steering were not very common and with the FJ55 on it's way out in 1980 (very few), this made the deal that much sweeter for me. Now it has it's issues for sure, I am giong to have to reproduce or find a set of good front fenders, aprons, and packing for behind the fender, and then do a little floor board replacement. The worst and most challenging part of this process is going to be deciding how and what method I am going to fix the raingutter's on the truck, they are pretty much completely shot.

I have no timeline on repairs nor even when I will start on them. the truck runs and drives as is, actually besides Jon's FJ40 4 speed I haven't driven one that shifts as smooth as this one does. I look forward to beggining work on the truck I just haven't decided when that will take place. Don't let the pictures fool you, they may look good but seen in person there's quite a bit of rust that is going to need repairing.

I assume this is the truck with liner inside? It looks better on the outside that I initially thought.

Looks like a fun project vehicle. Plus it should be more fun to drive with power steering and a 4 speed.

No such thing as to many projects or a project to big. Nothing more unique than a pig. Congrats.

Clint, the truck is not lined inside still has the factory toyota mat in good condition. Actually it is surprising how in tact the headliner still is. But like I said the pictures make the truck look far better than it actually is.

Good luck with that man. I had a 55 once, but never got it running before I moved to NC. It was just dang cool. Anyway, have fun with the rust. That stuff really pisses me off. I just spent the last two days blasting and grinding rust out of my 40's interior. There is no such thing as rust free in early cruisers, just different stages of completely rotting away.

How's this...chop the roof, then make a mold of it. Make a completely removable fiberglass top for it....that would be sweet.

Oh, and a bitchin FJ45 that may or may not be for sale.

Is this going to be a resto job or a SPO with a really big engine job?

Looks cool! Nothing like having a new project!!

Here is a link to a guy in GA that I think is supposedly going to be (or already is) producing 55 series replacement body peices. PACOL Online His website is new so you might have to shoot him an email.

Might be a good local place to find some fenders, apron, etc.

not by any means going to try and restore it, just going to make it a functional/driveable 55 series.

Alright, some very interesting news today about the cruiser, as time goes by I find that even though the truck is rusted in various areas I have still bought a FJ55 that was worth a little something.....So today on my way back over to Jerry's to finish up the landtank caster plates I was thinking for some reason I was in the pickup, and decided to shift into 5th gear!!!! well up until today I didn't think FJ55 had a 5th gear and had, up until now, assumed it was the four speed. Well upon further inspection "a" previous owner had installed the H55 tranny into it. Now I just have to find out what other goodies this truck has on it.

yeah, that's a weird feeling the first time isn't it? The 5th gear in a h55 is kind of "different" feeling anyway, and when you weren't really expecting it to even be there, that first clutch let out must have been interesting! Sweet!
