YES!!!
I even PM'd (somebody) about this trip just last week. This will be my first (hopefully) trip out and I am giddy like a school girl to get out there. I figure the beach would be a great place to take her on her first test.
COUNT ME IN!!!

We will be discussing this trip at the HAMOM this coming weekend, we will put dates to a calendar and proceed accordingly. We will need everyone's input of ideas for the trip so we can meet everyone's requests if possible.

I had a question about this trip. When I suggested it at the big meeting in Durham last month, I had in mind going over to the OBX, turning north, go through Corolla to where the road ends, and drive up the beach as far as we can.
I understand camping is not allowed on the beach, but I *heard* if you have a fishing line in the water, you're not camping so it's ok to fish all night.
Is this feasible for one night of the trip?
What did others have in mind, or what do you all suggest?
(Regardless, I am going, but will probably have to head over from the Triangle on Friday morning, and come back Sunday.)

Will it be easy to meet up with you on Friday night or possibly Saturday? I can take a couple days leave but just wondering in case I can not.
Also how does it usually go. Is it 2 days up and 2 back or 4 up, or is it a little driving and alot of camping? Just wondering as I'm a newbie to NC for the most part and have never been up there.

I will not be able to leave durham until Friday after 5 pm. So we will have two groups. Those leaving on Thursday and the ones leaving on friday. The idea is to meet both groups Friday night. Keep in mind that you can leave or arrive any time depending on your schedule.

I unfortunately won't be able to go as March is my busiest time of the year at work. (Maybe we can make some reconsiderations for next year. ) If you guys are making the trek up to Corolla, definitely check out vintage land cruiser tours --> Corolla Outback Adventures - Outer Banks, NC Tours Land Cruiser Adventure Tour Safari | History Ecology Wild Horses located on Rt. 12 (the main drag through town) on the sound side less than a mile before the road ends at the beach. Last time I stopped there I ran into a fellow IH8MUD'r from Virginia and exchanged a few stories. Anyways, I thought it'd be pretty cool for a cavalry of Cruisers to pull into the place and check it out. I didn't get to meet the owner, but I heard from the other IH8MUD'r I met there that he's a pretty cool guy.

I'm definitely interested...probably be in the friday group.
I'll know for sure closer to time but in the 80% committed range.
I've never been to OBX (new to NC) is there only camping? Are there places to stay near where we would be? I'm cool with the tent, but don't know if my wife will be up for it.
Thanks!

Jared, there are a great bit of hotels and Local Inn's throughout the OBX's. A majority of the group will most likely camp. Bt we are going to make this trip for everyone so even if a majority camp we will still have an itenary to meet those along with us, meaning we will have a time to depart each day

Sounding better each day. Who knows I may be able to talk the wife into it after all. But then I wouldn't get to camp...never mind...going bachelor . Plus I need to save the money until I get my diesel in.
By the way...how much extra fuel do you bring with you. I have never driven mine yet but considering I can't make it down the driveway without running out of fuel I doubt I can make it far on the stock tank during the day. Not sure if there are any long stretches I should be worried about.

I am not quite sure what you mean by not making it down your driveway, is your 40 using up the regular amount of fuel??? if it is...The strectches are not as long as you think. You should be fine with your tank full. You might bring an additional jerry can with fuel and that should be more than enough.

Ok so here is what I suggest for a route.
The first group departing on Thursday can try to meet in cedar island (South of OBX) and take the ferry over to ocracoke. You guys can chose to spend the night in cedar island and take the ferry to Ocrakoke early friday morning or if you arrive early at cedar island you can try catching the ferry into ocrakoke an spend the night there.
All friday your goal is to travel North. stopping for lunch, cape hatteras, scenic views and beach driving along the way until you reach nags head.
The idea is to join both groups in Nags Head. For friday night and set camp/hotel there. Saturday morning the idea is to travel north and driving through corolla heading towards carova as far as we can drive. As Joe said earlier this will be the best 4x4 experience of the whole trip due to the remoteness of the area. It seems you can drive into VA but we will go as far as time allows. Hopefully we well come accross wild horses and fishing opportunities. I believe there are 20 miles of beach driving with plenty of exploration oportunities. driving into the land opposite to the beach. Saturday night if spent in the corolla area will be the most primitive and as Joe said although we will be really camping we are in theory fishing all night. Sunday we will head down and come into land through manteo at which point we will head home. Or we could cross the virginia border and come home via 85.
here at some links of importance:
cedar island to ocrakoke ferry schedule:

ocrakoke to hatteras ferry schedule:

4x4 OBX access points and regulations:

I haven't driven all the way up the coast to Virginia for a long while, but I seem to recall you couldn't cross into the state? I believe at or near the VA border the beach turns into a wildlife preserve?
Regardless we will likely have the beach to ourselves, it's like 13 miles of no road.

Please note Juans previous post regarding ideas for the OBX trip, we would like to be able to let everyone know at the march meeting the plan/itinerary for the trip. Please post up your experiences and what you feel works best for the club so we can try and accomodate everyone. Club will have a group dinner Friday night, so if you plan to attend let us know around what time you will be arriving.

Sounds like a good one, wish I could make it. My brother is getting married that weekend so no-can-do for me.
Juan - As you know, we get over there 5-6 times a year. We were just there and will be back not long after this trip.
If you have any questions, let me know. I'll be glad to try and help.

Obligatory questions: is this ride limited to Club members? If not, is this ride limited to only Yoters? How many people can we accomodate?

This is a ONSC event, intended for it's members and family. We are first and foremost making this expedition at the request of our members and are making the decisions regarding the trip based on those that have posted up there arrival and departure dates. Logistics for this trip will be based on an "early" and "late" arrival, early group will be leaving sometime in the middle of the week and late arrival will be arriving sometime midafternoon evening friday.

The link that I posted to the beach closure to vehicles, has anyone done any additional research to make sure that trip will be ON?
