Cool ! I think she'll enjoy the trip. It will probably be the last family trip with her as our "baby". We have another due in June.

That's awesome Sean, you have some good looking Labs there! Sorry the others have passed on, but I am sure you had many great years with them!
On a totally different note... I have contacted the Kitty Hawk Wal-Mart and got "permission" to park tow rigs/trailers in the lot for the weekend. I think we might be best off to just set a time and meet there and maybe not worry about caravaning, because bathroom/fuel stops can get daunting.
Does everyone agree meeting at Wal-Mart in Kitty Hawk at say 2:00PM???
This way those that want to convoy can, but I won't hold anyone up by towing and we won't have to coordinate bathroom/fuel stops. Also, we'll be going the same route, so unless you are the last one coming, if you have a breakdown or issue someone will be able to spot you on and stop to help.

I'm still a bit confused on the who and where but it sounds like our fearless leader has it figured out and will let us know soon. If the Friday group starts at Kitty hawk that doesnt' leave for a lot of beach. But I'm in the Towing crew so I may be up for the same thing. I may just be using a tow bar though. I'm not sure. I think I may still have access to a flatbed trailer I'm borrowing.
Also I'm not sure how I'm going to get back. I have yet to figure out how to get my Cruiser out of 1st gear It just goes from 1st to 1st to N.
What is the max speed on the beach that we will be traveling if I never do manage to get it out of 1st?

I will post up the final plan this evening, along with specific locations and times. For those that are leaving thursday or friday, I will have access to the internet the entire trip so I will keep everyone updated of any changes or beach closings as we encounter things.

Alright guys, I am going through the logistics now, and would like a little help, there are a few that have been to the area, sounds like most want to travel north from Nags Head so for now thats the location I will use for meeting on Friday. As for the Thursday Group, I think a good meeting spot would be Hatteras Village or Frisco.
Friday Group I am thinking will arrive in Nags Head around lunch time or say 11:00-12, how does that work for most.
Thursday group will meet at Hatteras Village early afternoon evening. 3-6
How does this sound for most?
I am currently looking at specific destinations and will post maps and directions.

That's a good area, but too early for most on Friday. I don't have a problem, because I don't mind just leaving earlier. However, some were talking about not leaving Raleigh until 9am. Nags Head is about 4hrs in a passenger car, with no stops. I think it would have to be closer to 2PM for most to be realistic and not too hectic.
I am trailering to Kitty Hawk Wal-Mart and can drive the Cruiser to Nags Head from there. I'm cool with whatever, but the others coming on Friday will need to chime in.
FWIW, as of right now they are calling for rain showers (40%) on Saturday, which is a real monkey wrench for me since the top is off of my 40 and I don't have a soft top. I'm going to make a gametime decision Wed after work on whether or not to go topless. If not, will anyone be able to help me put it on Wed at my house in Morrisville?
Those who are camping, can we get an idea of how many cook stoves we'll have present. I don't have one, and would prefer not to buy one right now unless absolutely necessary. Are most people planning on cooking or eating in restaurants?
What about tents? I know some will be utilizing their 80s to sleep in, but for those of us in 40's.... Are we going to sleep under the stars on the beach or pitch tents?
Whew...I still have a lot of planning to do in the next couple of days!

I plan on bringing a small propane BBQ. I have a HUGE dual fired crab cooker type but it would take up a lot of space. But not like I don't have it. I am taking out the seats. So let me know.
As far as meeting that early that is fine by me as well. I am going to be in the boat with you. I am trailering my 40 and parking at the wal-mart with you so if you want to travel together we can caravan. I'm a morning person so I could leave here at 4 am and be happy as a lark. More time on the beach is all the better. As far as driving it on the road though not so sure about. I might have to drive down the beach to meet up back at nags head. That is unless I can figure out how to get it out of first gear. but it is only 9 miles so at 20 mph I can make in 30 mins on the beach
Also I am sleeping under the stars. At least here in Fayetteville they say it is going to rain every week and I think it has rained maybe 10 times since I have lived here in the last 1 1/2 years. Plus I am bringing a tent just in case.
I hope someone is bringing one of those little compressors. I thought I had one somewhere but I can't find it not to mention I still don't have head lights let alone a plug in for it.
I also have a lot of wood (not seasoned though) but I do have some scrap lumber that would burn up nice and fit in my roof rack. Again just let me know.
I"M STOKED FOR THIS THING. I just got new (used tires today off of craigslist....the guy actually lived .25 miles away )

I can't imagine why it would be stuck in first. Did you check to make sure there's nothing jammed in the shift lever? I don't want to be a downer, but it might be miserable with only first gear, especially if you can't get reverse.
If you're coming from Bragg, we'd probably need to meet at 95/64???

Ramon, I have a nice 2-burner camp stove, a backpacker's stove, and I'll also have my little Weber grill with me (I can bring another small grill too if it's needed). I'll have real charcoal and maybe some mesquite or hickory as well.
I'd be happy to go in on food w/ others. My pseudo-burritos turned out pretty well at Uwharrie. Or I can provide dinner for a few folks if they can provide some extras/condiments and maybe a 6-pack of Shiner Bock. Likely I'll have some breakfast burritos as well.
I plan to sleep in my 80 but can bring a tent if anyone needs it. No-one else is welcome to sleep in my 80, however.
I'll also have my small compressor, it can do about 3 vehicles then needs to cool off.
I am down for leaving whenever Friday morning and would be happy to caravan. I am not in any rush, 65-70mph is great, and I'll likely have my dog so a stop or two would be nice.
As far as an itinerary on the beach, take this with a grain of salt b/c I haven't been there in several years. I was hoping Friday we could come over and head south out of Kitty Hawk/Nags Head; if there is any beach driving and/or camping to the south, that'd be cool. Then Saturday morning head north, finally getting onto the beach north of Corolla and go on up as far as we can.

OK, here's what I can bring to the table. Bringing my two burner stove, and a small backpacking stove. Coffee-press for us java fiends, but it will only do small batches. I do have a propane turkey cooker type stove, but will only bring it if it is needed by someone else. My brother and I were treating this as mainly a camping type trip, so we're bringing our grub, so we can stay on the beach as long as possible. Camping in tents, and I'm going to fire up my propane lantern to make sure it's up and running.
We'd like to catch the 10:30am ferry over to Ocracoke on Thursday morning and catch up with the Wednesday crowd if you guys are going to fish and such, let me know where you're going and we'll catch up...
Ramon, I can help with the top if you need it .. just let me know.

I will move my tranny questions to the tech section (don't want to hijack) but I do have 1st N and Reverse. Thought I even found 2nd a couple of weeks ago.
That sounds like a good meeting place. I'll PM you here soon (tomorrow probably) and we can work out a time place if we decide not to caravan with the rest as our route looks slightly different.

Outer Banks Beach Bonfire Rules Sitting around a bonfire on the beach can be romantic and relaxing and it's certainly not something you get to do everyday. Before you make plans to build a bonfire, be sure you know which towns allow them. The regulations are as follows:Corolla
Duck
Southern Shores
Kitty Hawk
Kill Devil HillsBonfires not allowed.
Nags HeadPermits are required and are obtained from the office of the town firemarshall. Fires cannot be built within 50 feet of any combustible material, including buildings, beach grass, sea oats and driftwood. In addition, the hollowed-out pit must be no larger than 3 feet in diameter and not less than 1 foot in depth. The fire must be attended by a competent adult and must be extinguised prior to leaving.
Cape Hatteras
National SeashoreGround fires are permitted on the beach below the high tide line and a permit is not required. And, as above, the fire must be attended by an adult and be completely extinguished before leaving the site of the bonfire

I've just started looking into the details of the trip tonight myself. Here's a couple links to rules/regulations pages that I've found, if it helps anyone......
> Beach Rules and Regulations
> The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau FAQ's. Questions about Fireworks, things to do, family events, how to get here, renting a car, ATV's, bonfires, weddings, wild horses, fishing, lighthouses, temperatures, vacancies, lifeguards, rip currents, town names

Sounds like I'm covered for stoves... awesome! I learned an awesome trick for breakfast where you just scramble eggs/onions/peppers/cheese/ham/bacon....whatever, in a ziplock, drop it in boiling water and vuala....insta omlet with no cleanup. I'm going to be planning on that for my breakfasts, sandwiches for lunch, and since ONSC is taking care of one night's dinner, we should go in on a meal for the other. I can bring/cook/chip in on whatever.
We should try to get to areas for "fishing" (read camping) where fires are permitted, IMHO, it just wouldn't be right w/o a fire. Looks like they've changed the forecast AGAIN, to 40% chance of t-storms Sat night....grrrrrrr!!!

Wish I could make it, you guys should have a blast. This is one the best times of year to head to OBX. We'll be there in a few weeks.
Great article from this weekend, everyone here should put in your 2 cents when you're there next weekend. The injunction hearing isn't until next Friday so you're all good for this trip.
Island Free Press ...Local News
Edited to add the obvious but the best fishing spots are typically the beach areas that border inlets. Or maybe more applicable here, those are the typical all night hang outs...

Well guys I just talked to Ramon and here is our perspective on the logistics so far.
There is no tents allowed
There are no baths and you will get ticketed if you go potty not even #1 anywhere
No fires allowed, no glass...etc.
So here is our plan .....
We are trying to contact the guy from Corolla Outback Adventures - Outer Banks, NC Tours Land Cruiser Adventure Tour Safari | History Ecology Wild Horses to see if he would allow about 13 trucks on his property. Ramon and I have met him before and he expressed willingness to accommodate a group of Land Cruisers. Ramon is making a phone call to him tomorrow. This way we can have his place as a "base camp" and just run day exploration trips to corolla. It will be very primitive and uncomfortable, specially for those of you with 40 and no place to sleep.
If this plan falls apart, I have found a (I just called) a travelodge in Kitty hawk that allows pets. $10 bucks a pet, non smoking with two beds, free internet...etc...etc. $59 a night plus pet fees. 10% for AAA members. So in case we can not arrange to set camp at corolla outback this will be our plan B.
We we post tomorrow on here as soon as we have confirmation from Jay at corolla outback.

Also guys make sure you have your vehicles registered, insured and inspected if applicable. Any vehicles driving on the beach have to be in order with DMV on road guidelines.

Just to elaborate, I'm not trying to railroad anyone into doing anything...but I know I'm going to be miserable if there aren't some bathroom facilities available to me the entire weekend. Not to mention the camping logistics for those of us in 40's. I may wind up camping Fri night and grabbing a room Saturday, but at least we will have a better feel for what to expect. Juan has some really good points about not being able to camp on the beach and no bathrooms.

Yeah by no means trying to make any plans for anybody.....I am also most likely to grab a room Saturday if the guy from corolla outback can not accommodate us. I know I will need a shower after a night and a day at the beach...so getting a room sat night seems my best option.

Sounds like the Raleigh crew is still cool with leaving a bit later and taking our time to get out to Nags Head (which I vote for). I say we still meet up at the MickeyD's at 440 & Poole Rd. at 9am.
We can split and those with trailers can roll up to the Wal Mart or whatever...
I guess we need to get a fire permit for Friday night at Nags Head
Per the firemarshall's website:
A fun family activity and tradition for visitors of Nags Head are beach pit fires. These fires are allowed on the beaches of Nags Head with a "Pit Fire Permit" obtained from the Fire & Rescue Division. Permits are issued between 5 pm and 9 pm at the Headquarters Station located at the 14.5-mile post on the bypass and at the South Nags Head Station 21 located at 8806 S. Old Oregon Inlet Road.
Permits are issued based on current and forecasted area weather and fire conditions.
Call 252-441-5909 or 252-441-2910 for further information.
I guess we can just run by and grab one Friday afternoon.
I'm cool chilling with the corolla dude...do you think we can tent camp there?? Otherwise I can handle the travelodge.

Hey Juan, et al. - there are numerous places to tent camp at OBX.
Frisco has a great spot, right off the ORV access to the beach. It is right beside the airport.
Also, Oregon Inlet has a full campground though not as much privacy as you'll find in Frisco.
Finally, Ocracoke has a large camping area.
All have full facilities including drinking H2O, showers, trash, grills and toilets.
