It is not closed. Checked with wildlife resources. If it closes it will be all over the news. That whole debate is not new has been going on for about a year with no success in closing any areas.

Kudos on having the trip regardless, the drive on the sand to the state line and back to the pavement is a fun afternoon.

Andy I was just commenting on the fact that we had already decided the trip will go on. I was talked over on the mailing list. The response was not directed to your post. That was pretty informative thanks for posting

Andy are you not coming?? I think you should/... it is going to be an awesome trip, who is going to be my next chatting victim?? I wont be able to pull my usual 5am talks..LOL Reading further it says that if they rule the closing it is only going to be 12 miles out 46 total... So my guess is that even in worst case scenario there will still be plenty of places available for beach driving. Also there are other great sites and things to do besides driving on the beach.

I'm in and planning to bring the whole family (wife, kids, dog). We'll head out from Raleigh on Friday morning because I'd like to look around Nags Head and Kill Devil Hills before dark. Unfortunately, we won't be roughing it and plan to find hotels for Friday and Saturday. Can anyone give recommendations, particularly for Saturday around Corolla?

Clint

Hey Clint, we can get a caravan from the Raleigh area Friday morning, if folks are interested - that's when I'm heading over.

Not sure what your budget is, but we've stayed at the Corolla Inn before and really enjoyed it. Very relaxing and comfortable inn in a great location. I'm sure others will be have other recommendations.

Thanks Joe. I'll talk to the wife about the inn. It sounds nice plus they are pet friendly for our beagle.

I'm definitely up for heading out Friday together. I'm taking the day off Friday and plan to head out as early as feasible.

Any hotel recommendations around Nags Head for Friday night?

I cannot attend the HAMOM.

Will be leaving Holly Springs early Friday morning (caravan?). Will depart OBX to return home mid-morning Sunday.

I plan to camp or just fall asleep on the beach.

I hope to make it too.

I've been a little lax about keeping my junk travel worthy this winter. The HAMOM meeting was the first that I seriously considered making this trip , so it's a little quick for me to get things ready, but I think I can make it happen.

My first choice:.......... At minimum , I need to put brakes and upgrade the rotors on my Tundra , an o2 sensor would be nice , in order to trailer my FJ40 down. I also need , at least one tail light lens for the 40 , to ward-off the Po-Po at the beach. I would also like to order a Bud built tie rod for it , but I don't know if that's gonna happen. Everything else is cool , and I would just drive the 40 down if I wasn't too lazy to make the trip in a tractor. I've made trips as long , but the drive home always seems to take forever.

Second choice: My brother said that he'd love to trailer me down in his '07 Super Duty dually if I pay for all the diesel. He's in VA beach. If it's even really cool to bring him along ? It could possibly give the option to haul a double car trailer , if someone needs a "piggyback" from Raleigh.

Third choice: I just wheel the Tundra and like it!

Fourth choice: Man-up and drive the 40 !

Fifth: Just drive to Raleigh and beg for a shotgun position from one of you fine gentlemen that could use a basically worthless co-pilot.

I'm workin' on it !

BTW I've got 3 extra , beach casting fishing rods that I could bring if anyone needs one to use ?

Mine is going on the tow bar for multiple reason.

#1: Fuel is free in the F-250 and gets way better mileage

#2: I have about a 50/50 chance of breaking down at this point and will probably have to be towed back.

#3: It is a bit more comfortable on the roads.

Well, I'm taking mine and driving it to boot. I've got about the same chances about breaking down, actually it would surprise me if it doesn't... I shouldn't say that. I've got no indications that it should fail me. We'll put it to the test...
Hopefully those Bilsteins will make the road a little bearable....

Let's

Garner,

If you have a tow bar we could hook a tow bar to a tow bar ....hmmm that sounds like a really bad idea . I just hope my F-250 would be abe to recover my cruiser if it does break down. The things comes in at 7900 lbs and those tires are skinny.

I agree though. I really have no indication that I should break down. I have just never driven it anywhere yet. So I have not developed any faith.

Wow...diesel is up to $3.70/gallon. That's nuts. This trip might cost me $150 in fuel alone....that sucketh loudly, though you 80 series guys are really going to feel it. If I remember right, the loose sand really drains fuel, but I don't know what it would do to a diesel's economy vs a gasser and how many beach miles we'll actually drive. Any ideas on fuel consumption from anyone's experience?

.......Tell me about it! I'm trying to do the math on the most cost efficient way for me to go.

BTW........If I can afford to have my brother trailer me down, would it be objectionable for my brother to tag along with me/ride shotgun ? I completely understand if it isn't really cool to bring non-club members. Not a problem.

I can't speak for the club, but I don't think it's a problem for your brother to ride in your 40. We would rather not have non-member rigs in the group.

I'm bringing my whole family in my truck (including my mother-in-law).

So what are you all packing?

I was thinking of an extra 5 Gallons of Fuel, Water, A few MRE's, map, camera, tent, and my sleeping bag. Then of course a few tools and emergency things. Comming from the coast of oregon you think I would be a big fisher but I just don't have the patience so no pole (unless needed to camp over night (Anyone have an extra?)).

Also maybe if we are getting really crazy I can bring a cooler, my hibachi, and some firewood.

Ohh and BEEEEEEER. In Aluminum of course.

Addicted, I can bring a rod for you if you need one. Besides my own, I have three extra beach casting rods that I can bring.

Uhh, I'm still in the planning stage .............. I think some spare tools, recovery junk, fluids, a cooler for beer and hopefully some fish, small compressor, jerry can, maybe sandwich fixins', possibly grill/venison, something to sleep on, camera/video cam., what else ? ............. hmm .......Beer !

I think we're on the same page. Food, beer, tools, stove, chairs, table, tent, water, extra gas, etc. I've got a few rods, but never really done any fishin' so someone will have to school me on bait, rigs, and such. Still debating on the kayaks... Maybe a football, get a little ONSC football game going? (Do we have enough people?)
