Sources for new winch cable?
Hey guys (and gals),
Anybody know of a local source for new winch cable? If not local, what other sources have you used? Thanks! __________________ 1995 4Runner UnLimited - "Fort Knox" - SAS'd, Marlin’d, Locked, Warn'd, Snorkeled & Dented. 1977 FJ-40 - Stock 2007 Tundra CrewMax - Daily driver / tow rig |

Ok, obviously I've never had the rope on my winch, since this is the original cable I'm replacing. A few questions:
1. Would I need to change to a Hawse fairlead, or just make sure my rollers are nice and smooth, or is that even necessary? 2. How much do you have to worry about nicking/fraying on the rope? 3. Any problems using the synthetic stuff w/ a snatch block? I take it the main advantages of the rope over cable are: weight, doesn't cut up your hands if you don't wear gloves, and doesn't whip back if it breaks. Is that about it? Any disadvantages? Cost? Longevity? __________________ 1995 4Runner UnLimited - "Fort Knox" - SAS'd, Marlin’d, Locked, Warn'd, Snorkeled & Dented. 1977 FJ-40 - Stock 2007 Tundra CrewMax - Daily driver / tow rig |

1. No, just sand and smooth the rollers.
2. Not so much and you can get a rope protector and you can fix the rope if need be 3. Nope. THat is it and it is stronger than cable and does not stretch as much. None that I know of. It may cost a little more but it is much safer. It last just as long. __________________ 00 - UZJ100 - D Light Mod, 2 FRB's, Husky Liners, BFG AT KO - 285/75 R 16 03 - UZJ120L http://insea.tv/Home/Home.html |

Ok, how about suggestions for a specific brand of synthetic rope? Local distributors?

1: I would convert to a hawse just in that off case where thae rope could get wedged up between the 2 rollers, but more for the better approach you'll get without those damnded things sticking out there..
![]() 2: Most rope comes with a 5-10' length of sleeve for dragging over rocks. 3: None at all. The other advantage.. you can unspool a bunch of it at your feet and then fling the hook near the tree where you want to be hooked up, no more having someone hump their way up a hill with a hook and cable in tow. It also takes a GOOD amount of weight off the front end.. like 20lbs. IIRC. Downside? Rope H8sMUD . It should be cleaned after being run through it well. Also, UV will weaken the rope over time, but the rope guard is usually long enough to cover it all to protect it. I'd go to the Pirate Vendors section, see who's having a sale. That's what I had planned until I bought my winch with the rope already on it. __________________ Rich in NC FJ - '73 FJ-40 Cruggy - LSx/4-wheel steer Rockwells/4-link/coilovers/42's Build thread --> http://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=124040 '01 Chevy 2500HD 8.1 Allison Lux-o-tow |
