OBX and Cullowee trips

I think I spelled that right

I'm looking to get some trips in this year and enjoy my truck a bit more...not necessarily hard wheeling, more like hard camping with the mil trailer in tow.

Two years ago, I went out to Portsmouth island and camped on the beach, fried up fresh fish, etc. I wouldn't mind doing that again, but Portsmouth is more difficult to get to and there may be more interesting options.
Thoughts on where and dates? Cooler the better for sleeping.

In the fall....maybe last weekend in October or first in November, I would like to make a run to Cullowee for a serious cook fest. I have a buddy that cooks like nobody else, so I thought we would pack the trailer with coolers and grill stuff and do light wheeling with heavy eating!
Thoughts?

Both of these, I'm thinking long weekend. Like take Friday off, or at least a half day on Friday to make the travel part happen. I guess it depends on what you guys can do, or want to do as well.

Upstate Cruisers have the Pumpkin Pig Run planned for the end of October at Cullowhee, this is a highly recommended trip and several of us are going. See this thread on the UC forum. It is suitable for unmodified vehicles..........

I've been wanting to go to OBX, head north til the road ends, then drive up the beach towards Virginia - maybe 8-10 miles. Pick a spot, put some lines in the water, and relax. I understand you're not allowed to camp on the beach, but you can stay there 24x7 if you're "fishing". Unfortunately I cannot do anything like this until November. :(

November isn't a bad time to go as long as you can deal with rain, wind and chilly temps. It is actually one of my favorite times. The place is empty and you won't have to deal with crowds of any sort.

If you're going to fish, I'd head south though. Taking the beach to the VA state line is fun and a nice cruise but the surf fishing is best in Buxton.

Of course, that is if you want to catch fish. Re-reading your post seems like relaxing is the priority and fishing is an excuse to be there all night.

As rutbeer pointed out, Portsmouth island is a great trip too. Ferry access from Atlantic, NC is easy.

It may have been November when I was in Portsmouth...it was chilly, but warmed up enough in the day that you could get away with a light jacket. I'm a fan of campfires though, so chilly but not freezing is the key. Guess I have to hook up the heater in the 40 anyway.

Yeah....I'm not sure what to think of that trip. Part of it sounds open to all, then is sounds like oink only. I'm not an Upstate member either..... I would like to go though.

FWIW, you are more than qualified to take part in the ride. You are a TLC enthusiast, live in the better Carolina () and do not need to be a member of UC or own an Iron Pig.

If your schedule allows it, I suggest you try to go if you are at all interested.

done!
We will go. I may bring the wife, or at least bring Dane. He will not be thrilled about not driving his jeep, but I need to convert him from the darkside anyway. Heck, I have two toyotas....maybe I drive the 45 and he brings my 40.

So...you think a diesel 40 is enough PIG?

The trip is giving me a timeline to try and meet to finish mine. We'll see if I can do it. Good thing it's a three day weekend, and I'm not going anywhere...

not trying to be a party pooper here but I do believe the event is going to be open to all 55's and then from there it will be restricted to UC members only............ but it is easy and cheap to join UC .

Please verify this if it's the case, there are quite a few of ONSC members that are planning to make this trip in 80's and even a few 40's

We'd love to have you guys come and I hope you do make it........ Cullowhee is an awesome place especially with the colors at their peak. But like I said it will be limited to 55's and UC memebers, I encourage those of you who aren't UC memebers to join up and attend the trip you won't regret it!!

I hope it doesn't seem that UC is trying to exclude anyone from the trip........ that is not our intent at all. Rather the case is Cullowhee isn't the type of place that can handle the large crowds that we have been recieving at our last few "open" events so in the sake of keeping things manageable for this event we decided to keep it a memembers run. I hope that helps.

JP

I had already planned on joining to go. I have some family that lives in Spartanburg, so "family" trips, might be extended to "Land Cruiser Family" trips!

Not sure there is an easy solution to your crowd issues but I don't think $12 would stop me or anyone from coming. Not to mention it inflates your membership numbers with people who may not be interested in your org. You would be much better off controlling the crowd with an registration process.

I know you are not trying to send the wrong message but it does.

I hope the trip is a success!

I'd like to personally apologize for any issues this suject has caused ONSC. It's not a good idea to promote another club event in your forum. Especially if it takes away from you growing your club. We have a policy of trying to work with the clubs around us and not against them. I would like to ask any UC members to make sure we keep our stuff in the UC section or through pm's.

Marshall, I brought up the UC trip and didn't think there'd be any problems - certainly not trying to cause any! I didn't realize it was 55's and club members only, so thank you guys for clarifying.

I hope everyone here is ok with things; there should not be *any* animosity towards any individual or any club, period.

joe, ONSC and UC member who'll be at Cullowhee............

I guess i'm going to come across as a d!ck, but, i think the easy solution has been stated, it's a UC event. If you are not a UC member, you are not invited, unless you have a 55. This event has been mapped out, scouted out and put together by UC members for this event.

We are always open to anyone coming to our events, however, sometimes they get so big that there is no way to accommodate everyone. Or, there are so many people it takes us 5 hours to ride 1 mile of trail because there are 30 trucks there. Or, some people don't want to get scratches or mud or body damage, so then plans have to change and it throws everyone off. Someone ends up suffering in the long run.

So, to fix this we decided to make this trip a UC event only. The amount of trail and area we will be covering is daunting to say the least. Making sure everyone gets to the start location, stays warm, keeps their rigs running, makes it through the trip with a smile on their face and makes it home safely in one piece is a huge task.

It's like the GSMTR inviting all the jeep clubs and chevy clubs ect... IT would just be too much.

I hope i haven't spoken out of turn and offended anyone. I just had to get it off my chest. I don't think that joining the UC whether or not you want to boost numbers, participate in future events, be president or whatever is asking too much.

The main point to me, is that this trip is like a reward to the members for their participation and hard work throughout the year.

EDIT: Fj45, i am not aiming this at you personally, it's just something that's been brought up a bunch. Most of our events (meaning UC) are for anyone with a toyota that like to wheel. I'm also not implying that we are better than anyone....although that's up for debate ......but this trip in particular is best enjoyed on a smaller scale.

OK so what do I have to do to get in on an ONSC OBX run?
I'll pay dues, I'll take you on a private Cullowhee run, I'll even wash dishes.
I've been wanting to put the street tires back on the FJ and tear up some sand ever since I bought it.

Why cain't we all jest git along?
And will I get shot for wearing an ONSC sticker next to my UC one? Cause I'm doing it ever since I went to URE to (I thought) an ONS run.
If you'll tell me where I'll send some dues. If there are any.
