GarnerFJ40's Progress

Going to start this thread so everyone can pop in and see at what stage I'm at in getting this ex-Canadian Cruiser up to "decent" shape. Not trying for restoration, nor 100% Crawler, just a good off-road worthy vehicle to drive. I camp, hike, kayak and surf, so this Toy has to carry my other toys.

Stay tuned for pictures.

I'd love to hear from any and all for advice, so post away.

Brian

So here's the first pic. Those that went to last month's get-together at the Cary Ale house saw it up close and personal. I'm in the process of scraping/sanding/grinding the entire interior tub. My intent is to get it close to bare metal (to see the bad spots), fix the rot, cover with POR-15, than with Herculiner.

So here's what I run into on the 2nd day of cleaning. On both corners behind the seats I run into some rot. I'm going to clean it up, get some 1/8 sheet? (mostly due to the size welder my bro has) and fab some corners for both the inside and outside. POR-15 all that doesn't require bare spots for the actual welds, and then go back in and paint the rest. I got POR-15 Silver for this reason. PO put foam filler and painted an old school tar/bed liner on it.

I'm debating on how much to put the herculiner on. I'd like to paint the transmission cover, fuel filler cover, gas tank cover, hard top shelf, seat brackets and center console the original nebula green to contrast the black herculiner.

Cool Brian. If you want some inspiration, look here:

Not that mine turned out show quality, but I wasn't far from where you are now just about a year ago.

Good looking young'n by the way.

Thanks!

And that is some good inspiration, becuase I'm the same way. Not looking for show quality, just a structurally sound dependable 40.

Not much progress

Not too much progress, but it's ready for some... Finished the good parts of the bed floor and POR-15'd it. Cutting and welding to commence in bad parts...

A little something to hold everyone over. I can't find my camera with the latest pics, but this is one from a month or so ago. Wire-wheeled to metal, a little H3PO4, and some POR-15 Silver to cover.

What you can't really see is the holes from the previous pictures, all you see is the angle iron and sheet ready to go in...

Welding is all done. Stress tested by all my 260 pounds jumping up and down on it (it should hold for a little while). Now I need to figure out what I'm going to do with my tranny cover (pretty rusted at the thin edges), clean the welds, primer it, and then get it ready for 2 gallons of Herc.

Well this picture will be better than than the ones I printed out for the last meeting. Two gallons of Herc. on the tub. Going to let it sit for a week or so before I start putting things back on it...

Definitely! I'm looking forward to the re-assembly. Next pic should be back together... But, it's really just the tip of the iceberg! At least it will be somewhat driveable...

OK, so after skipping this months HAMOM, sorry everyone, the John Deere Green 40 is reassembled (somewhat). Next in store is to reconnect the heaters, swap some shocks out, have a muffler shop do my exhaust, (stainless?) and get into the rats nest of electrical wiring. I've already been in there once and got half of the problems fixed, but I need to get all of them taken care of. There are other items to be addressed, but nothing too major. Enjoy the pics...

The 40 looks great. I bet you can't wait to drive it. I know how you feel. Hopefully see you at the next Hamon. I love your floor. Looks a lot better than my liner I bought from Walmart.

Highland,

Funny you lived off Guy, I drive down that way everyday to drop my daughter off at daycare (Winston), as I work in Clayton. Did you live N of 70 or S of 70?

Thanks for the support for everyone else, I'll see you at the next meeting.

Also, anyone know of a place to get some custom paint made up for rattle cans? As you can see I sprayed actual JD green on the sides (better than primer gray), but you can tell the difference. I do have the color code and formula...

Brian

Uhh....If memory serves.....that would be south ? Coming from the beltline you would make a right on Guy rd......."White Oak Plantation"........

I could tell you some funny stories about 4 wheelin' in what is now, the nice new neighborhood beside White Oak......Lee something ?, I think it was...right behind my house.

It was actually a pretty fun little set of trails back there before they started building houses..... [Building was delayed for years because the builder lost his but after 9-11]

Brian - The 40 has come a long way since I have seen it. If you are planning on coming to the HAMON in March, I'll bring a extra Key for the white 40.

Just a quick update, but no pictures. Dropped off the cruiser for exhaust work, and sounds/looks great. Only question is, exhaust exits the back, underneath one of the bumperettes. I'm not sure if I'm digging it, but I'll let it go for now. The guy doing it knows an Eddie Wilson (?) with a Dune Beige 40, up in Raleigh area, anyone know of him? Told him I didn't, but then again I know a lot of you by screen names, and not real names.. :(
Oil seals on the front axles were leaking, and it just coincided with my company bonus, so I've having the work done, instead of attempting it myself. They'll tear into the axles this week. Ordered up new 5125 Bilsteins all around, and that should do it for my wallet for now...
I'll probably be bringing wire and a multimeter, and trying to finish the wiring at the HAMOM. Still no running, interior, or turn signals. Any ideas other than grounds?

See you guys in Sanford! and OBX....
