I've been there many times. Cool place, lots of cool trails but only one for rigs like ours.

All of the trails except one are for dirt bikes, quads, 3 wheelers, etc. Trails are very tight with mountain laurel, trees and rocks.

Great fishing nearby as well.

I used to go a few years ago when i had dirt bikes. It was mostly dirtbike/atv folks though. I only saw one truck on the trails ever.

Went there a couple times on ATV's. Was boring on ATV's looked to be even more boring for a decent trail rig. May have changed since I've been there though. Are the trails there open now???

Only trail 1 is for trucks....all the rest are bike/quad/atv. That one takes you up to the picnic grounds on top of the mtn. There are alot of unpaved forest roads you can explore around (nothing major to wheel). The road from just outside the OHV area to Mortimer is great. Parallels Wilson Creek. Lots of waterfalls, rapids and some areas to walk around.



When I was there last month, we talked with the local S&R team. They were doing some exercices and remapping some of the trails (washouts, logfalls,etc). He saw the lexus badging on my 450, asked what kind of truck it was, and then proceeded to tell us about a 17 year old boy who "borrowed" Dad's brand new 75K Land Rover and rolled it twice in the middle of the night. Kid was ok physically, but was a nervous wreck about what dad was going to do to him when he found out about the totalled landy....

Wilson Creek Gorge is a cool place but on the weekends, especially in the summer, it's just too damn crowded to even be enjoyable. There are other areas right around there that are less crowded.

It's too bad there aren't more places to wheel in Burke county, the terrain is certainly ideal for it up on the mountain. The Globe area, just NE of Mortimer used to have some decent places but a lot of the harder stuff has been closed.

About the only thing I know in that area even open any more is the Richland Gap trail.

Yeah, we went on a semi cold january day and the OHV area was packed. There were kayakers on the river, and we passed several cars. I can see where that place would be packed.

Even the unpaved roads (Globe Rd) from Mortimer up to Banner Elk is nice. Lots of waterfalls and scenery to take in. Not hard wheeling at all (shoot, I got passed by a camry with a carseat).... but it does get a lil dirt on the tires. We drove about 70 miles on those dirt roads around there back in the fall, saw some great colors, and none of the crowds on the blue ridge.

This is an old post but I cannot find where Globe Rd runs fro Mortimer to Banner Elk. I see Globe Rd running from Brown Mtn area to Blowing Rock. If anyone could shed light on this or other places that would be good forest road adventers for the fam I would be greatful. We are headed up to the Boone area next week.

Check out some of the posts from the July trip to Brown Mountain, it was said that some parts of Globe Road have been closed. We just got back from the ORV park, and it's a fun ride for someone just wanting to see the scenery and not a hard wheeling excursion. Watch out for bikes and ATV's, they didn't seem to think that trucks could also use the trail...
